Ok. I’m doing it. I’ve wanted a first gen forever! I know it’s not a 4x4 but it’s the right price with super low miles. I’ll get a locker eventually for trails.

    I currently have a Jeep XJ 98.

Now, what kinda tired should I get? I’ll do a search on the forum.

I loved my K02's dearly and they never disappointed. After I upgraded from the factory 15" wheel to a 17", I threw a set of General Grabber ATX's on there in 245/75R17 and once again, no complaints. My '99 just rolled 422,000 original miles. You are putting your money into a great platform.

Like everything else in business it depends on the leadership of the management and quality of the team.

Good ones are out there. Just not enough of them. Not nearly enough.

Glad you found a good one to work with!

It's too late for the frame to fail 'prematurely'.

That really just looks like surface rust. I'd ping around the frame with a hammer to be sure, but overall that looks like a good one. I'd just hit all that with a wire wheel and re-paint it.

Being that you're in CA, you don't have to worry too much about doing the Fluid Film treatments and all that. I literally don't do anything to my frame.

Central NC doesnt rust trucks out. That looks totally normal for around here, and Id say its fine.

For 10 large I couldve found a 4x4 with reasonably low miles too.

Yeah I know, I’ll prob kick myself for not getting 4x4 but I rarely use it out here.

The low miles was the selling point.

    ideally I want 2004 4x4 5 speed.

Possibly. OP's truck in a 4x4, in CA, would likely fetch $12-14k easy, especially with that low of mileage.

From what I've seen, the prerunners are usually at least a grand less than the 4x4s sometimes 2 grand, and given that the 4x4s are becoming fewer and farther between, buying a pre-runner and converting it is actually a pretty good idea.

Sure, there's some more work involved, and you have to take some time sourcing the parts, but if you do it right, there are many people here who've done the conversion for a grand, or even less once you sell back your prerunner transmission. It's a little more complicated if you want to keep the ADD, so lots of people are doing manual hubs and a J shifter.

Seach around for the folks who have done 4x4 conversions. The prerunners are the exact same truck, just without a transfer case and front diff. It's pretty much all bolt on.

Take a close look where the rear shocks attach. My 2004 was 5 years old (in the salty northeast) and had a large hole in that area.

The dealer wouldn't let me drive it home.

I will say based on that VIN, the vehicle saw almost NO INSTANCES inside a dealership throughout it's lifetime. It did have the lower ball joint recall completed in 06 in North Carolina. Clean title, no red flags from the Toyota history.
