I own a OR but voted Sport for personal functionality. The long box would have come in alot handier than the diff lock for me, even though the color matched mirrors, handles and bumper on a super white such as mine always make me think "girl's truck". I could take or leave the hood scoop but I did swap out my chrome grille for color matched.

I like the off road, and have the off road. I like the black mirrors and door handles, and I'm not a huge fan of the scoop. The interior is the same, for the guy who said that the sport seats are better (unless things have changed since my 06.)

No still the same seats. But for the interior, with the off-road, you have that "extra button" that is pretty sweet! :)

The sport is by far superior. Locker is over hyped crap 90% of people never use.

The sport is by far inferior, obviously. The young kids are the ones who are enamoured by the fake scoop that 100% of people never use.

Is it true that you can only get up to 5mph with the locker engaged? My friend has the OR and thats what the sticker says on his truck. It says that it is only to get you unstuck and then you disengage it.

ok, noob question, but does the off-road pack have an open diff with the push-button locker and no LSD?

I told the dealer to bring me the first loaded 4x4 double cab she could get her hands on ... and a gray Sport is what was delivered. I like the locker options on the Off Road, but 99% I'm on streets and highways, and it rarely rains in SoCal.

I've driven on dirt and fire roads, but I'm not a hard core off-roader, as I can't afford to be wrenching and fixing my daily driver.

I really love and enjoy my Sport, room for the kid, room for the gear,
whether it's hauling trailers, motorcycles, guns or the BBQ & coolers ...

    it's all good.

If the universe ever restores me to a state of financial security, then I'll add another CJ to the collection for off-roading, another Prius for commuting, and I'll keep the Taco Sport for hauling the motorcycles, bicycles, guns and whatever other toys suit my fancy.

I'm well pleased with my truck.

    New ones ('09 +)?

All diffs on these Tacos are open... for ease of steering and low cost service/ repair issues.

The Locker is activated by a push button, yes... and for the brief times you use it, if you need to, the rear is not 'open'.
However, if your OFF ROAD Taco is 4WD, then you have Traction Control AND Active Traction Control... call it 'smart lockers' front & rear... The gear locker is perhaps a back up or a sales tool until everyone understand A-TRAC.

Wow, I am sure glad you have a Sport then (if that's what you think)!

The locker may be a thing of the past once everyone gets informed by the Active Traction Control now on '09 and newer OR 4WD Tacomas. I don't use my locker, because the A-TRAC is better and I don't need to.

Before A-TRAC, I did use my locker many, many times on my last two Tacomas.

You have some discoveries to make! Color matched parts and a fake scoop won't get you more places than other trucks... but a locker or A-TRAC will!

Thanks David, so are you saying that the 05-08 Off Road package only locked with the button, and 09+ have traction control?
    just tryin to learn.

The rear locker is still there in the Off Road trucks... The 4WD Off Road Trucks also have A-TRAC which is a super 'smart locker' system that gives you the traction of front and rear lockers without the steering issues (lockers try and make the truck go straight, and that can be bad on a curvey mountain road!).

All 2009+ Tacos have TRAC and AUTO LSD which uses the brake system to create limited slip on the tires... it is a proven method and means you still have open differentials when TRAC isn't beig utilized. You also have the option of turning TRAC and A-TRAC off so you can stay wheeling with open differentials, spinning away and not have the limited slip function.

Here are the drive options a 2009+ Off Road 4WD Tacoma has...

    1) 2WD: VSC and TRAC active, engine regulated ('Limited Slip Lite').
    2) 2WD: 'AUTO LSD' ('TRAC OFF MODE'). No engine regulation for 'strong' limited slip.
    3) 2WD: 'VSC OFF MODE' (TRAC is off for 'open differential').

    4) 4WD-Hi: VSC and TRAC active. No engine regulation for 'strong' limited slip.
    5) 4WD-Hi: 'VSC OFF MODE' (TRAC is off for 'open differentials').

    6) 4WD-Lo: VSC and TRAC are both off in L4 ('open differentials').
    7) 4WD-Lo: 'A-TRAC' on gives a 'locker-like, super strong' limited slip, front and rear.
    8) 4WD-Lo: Rear Differential Locked and open front differential (A-TRAC off).
    9) 4WD-Lo: RR DIFF LOCK + A-TRAC on, 3 MPH limit.
