Lost Key & Fob - ACE Hardware Replacement

If you use the Techstream software as I posted in a post on the first page and get your drivers from that same forum there are no viruses. The Techstream software allows you to select previously programmed keys for removal so you will not bump off a key you are using. The software does not hack the system. It is the SAME software that the Toyota technicians use. There is no hokus-pokus or HACK about it. To purchase this software which is only distributed through Toyota for GlobalTechStream costs around $3000 for one year subscription. The key programming is literally 1/100 of what you can do with it. Research it and see what it can do. I did 2 keys for my tacoma for $11.49.

Just make sure you have a key with a .dot on it or a G and get the right one.

 

Yeah, I'm already balls deep in that thread. I have a post with the binary keygen I wrote, a link to a clean techstream 14.30.023, and a clean x64 driver. I just bought the cable from that seller you linked on Amazon, and that CD was full of garbage, so I obviously didn't use it.

 

I didn't use that CD either. It was an old version and I already had the newest release I had downloaded from that forum so I didn't even try it. Good to know I saved myself the hassle of dealing with the viruses on it. Sorry if you got them on your computer, I did not know they sent you an infected CD with it or I wouldn't recommend the cable. I will edit that post and put a warning on there about the viruses.

 

No lol, it's all good. I'm not about to blindly run something off a sketch cd that clearly was pumped out from china. I did just scan what I felt like, didn't look too much like false positives to me. But, I also knew this was a sketch cable from china, so there's that. Isn't the first sketch cable, won't be the last, haha.

 

Check out that link I posted on page 1 for the fobs. I’ve purchased 3 of them as spares and have yet to have an issue with any of them after a couple years.

Toyota Tacoma Remote

Have all transmitters for the vehicle at hand

1. With the key out of the ignition, unlock and open drivers door (all other doors must be closed)
2. Within 5 seconds,
Insert the key into the ignition (Do NOT Turn it) and Pull key out.
Insert the key into the ignition (Do NOT Turn it) and Pull key out.

3. Within 40 seconds,
Close then open the drivers door.
Close then open the drivers door.
Insert the key into the ignition (Do NOT Turn it) and Pull key out.

4. Within 40 seconds.
Close then open the drivers door.
Close then open the drivers door.
Insert the key into ignition and leave it in the ignition.
Close the drivers door. Turn the ignition to ON then back to OFF (Do NOT Start or crank engine).
Remove the key from the ignition.

5. Within 3 seconds, the power door locks should lock then unlock automatically indicating successful entry into programming mode. Return to step 1 if the door locks do not cycle at this point or try the alternate procedure listed below.

6. Within 40 second,
A. Press the lock and unlock buttons on the remote simultaneously for 1.5 seconds.
B. Immediately after letting go of the lock and unlock buttons, press and hold the lock button by itself.
Within 10 seconds, the door locks should lock and then unlock once indicating successful programming.
(If the door locks cycle twice, repeat steps A and B in step 6 as the remote was not accepted)
Repeat steps A and B in step 6 for each new remote.

7. Open drivers door.

Alternate programming procedure: Have all remotes for the vehicle ready. Toyota Avalon vehicles use step 10a, all other vehicles use 10b.

1. Make sure all doors are closed
2. Open Driver's door
3. Insert key into ignition, then remove it
4. Press LOCK and UNLOCK on the vehicle door lock switch at 1 second intervals 5 times.
5. Close and re-open driver's door
6. Press LOCK and UNLOCK on the vehicle door lock switch at 1 second intervals 5 times.
7. Insert key into ignition switch
8. Turn the ignition to ON then back to OFF (Do NOT Start or crank engine).
9. Remove Key from ignition
10. Door locks should cycle to confirm entry into programming mode
a. AVALON - Press LOCK on remote for a minimum of 1 second
b. ALL OTHER VEHICLES - Press and hold LOCK & UNLOCK together for 1.5 seconds; then press and hold LOCK until the locks cycle
11. Locks should cycle once to confirm programming. If they cycle twice, the programming failed
12. Repeat button procedure to program remaining remotes
13. Close driver's door. Test remotes.

That's the thing, not all people are comfortable with computers or using something like Techstream. I could prolly figure it out, but I just want a set of keys for cheaper than the dealer with as little personal effort as possible.

 

Yeah I get that, I wonder if it would be possible for someone to code or clone a key remotely, I would imagine the logistics of doing that isn't really possible. *maybe* if you have some real special equipment, but my knowledge on this subject is pretty limited. If anything, just getting the info off the original key would require some hardware. Maybe FauxRoux could chime in. I guess maybe it would be feasible if someone was able to clone a key, to just mail a copy of your key to them, let them clone it, send it back. I'm thinking along the lines if some member on TW was able to do it, have it like a forum thing.

 

I could show people how to measure the "cuts" on a key so a working mechanical key could be made to send through the mail.

But in order to make a clone key, a working key would be required. And about half the time you would also need access to the vehicle to make a clone key (which would be a different process than the on-board programming which uses the OBD2 connection).

But in the case the vehicle wasn't required a person would still need a "RW4" (or equivalent) for programming, a decent key cutting machine (preferably for automotive/double sided keys) and a key mill if you needed to do high sec keys....

There would have to be quite a few people on the forums looking to have keys made to make it worth anyone investing that kind of money.

So its not really feasible...

The best thing to do is shop around for locksmiths with fair prices... dealers are always way more expensive.

 

I guess I was mostly just looking at the programming, not cutting. Then have whatever local shop that can cut do the physical cut. Just a random idea, I figured it wouldn't be feasible out the gate. Just bought a "programmed" key today for $4.33. Works like a champ.

A key, without the plastic top because that was $2 more. Found out the 4cyls never have immobilizers haha.

 

That's just a regular mechanical key. $5 is all it should cost. You can make that with any key cutting machine.

An immobilizer is what prevents the engine from turning on if the correct transponder chip is not present. That's what is embedded in the plastic head of a transponder key. Which is not to say that all plastic headed keys have transponders in them.

While they are more common than not now days, my 2010 Tacoma does not have a transponder key system. Just regular keys.

 

Yeah I know haha, I was joking... that's why I threw "programmed" in quotes, I don't need programming. It's just a hunk of metal. But I could have had the plastic mold for $2 more apparently, no transponder in it obviously. My post was just a joke.

Oh, so it wasn't just me (to?).... haha.

But with the fob programming process. I think everyone should agree that a rumor should be started, to program a 4cyl key, you need to do the my little teapot dance in front of your truck, run around it 3 times counter-clockwise, open and close the tailgate, then flash the headlights 6 times.
