This quite interesting to know...but how smart is it to drive with the fuel that low on the fuel pump and system

Well, the info is more for when you have no choice (ie. no gas stations around) and need to know how much is really still in the tank. I usually get gas when the light comes on and never had any fuel issues. Since this thread, I wanted to get gas as soon as I could at the quarter tank mark. It is harder to be close to a station (with cheaper gas) if you can't see the point (when the light comes on) ahead of time.

If I am getting 17 mpg, like yesterday's tank... The light sould come on at 289 miles or soon after (4 gallons in the tank)... The gauge should be on E at 314.5 miles (+/-), if there is 2.5 gallons in the tank at that point. I should run out at 357 miles (17 mpg x 21 gallons)... but I hope to never do that!

Thought I'd bump this for other who mighta missed it a couple months ago.
I was following the thread with nothing to contribute.
Now I will: Thanks for the Informative Research.
I've noticed a couple members, who I think, ordered an UltraGauge.
Starting dabbling with mine and I like the Gallons Left, Miles 'til Empty, Time to Empty, etc Gauges.
Anyone one else using these Gauges?
    Finding 'em accurate?
If no one posts answers, and after my Gauges are accurate,
I'll see if I have anything meaningful to contribute to the thread topic

    Thanks again for the info
and a link to UltraGauge if anyone's lookin' for specs or info:

I believe all 2nd gens have a 21.1 gal tank.
But I'm not familiar with reg cabs or 4 cyl., but I think yours should be 21.1
Someone correct me if I'm wrong, please.

Never, I repeat, never put that out there ...... because they do that without your permission......

And yes, all tanks are the same regardless of model.

I'm allowed to be wrong once a year, and I've saved up 15 or 20 of 'em
    so I can take.
I also like I have the right info.
and I speak before I think, way to often.

    Thanks

Of course it doesn't help that it is just a light and not a chime, kinda wish there was a chime there. Haven't ran out of gas yet and don't plan to anytime soon.

The UltraGauge I posted about above, has adjustable alarms for all gauges.

Once I know I've got mine calibrated, I can set alarms for gallons, distance or time 'til empty

the other threads that are somewhat related are the 'How many gallons in your tank?' and Tacoma gas mileage thread... We all have unique mileage figures based on many things (engine size, load weight, 4WD or 2WD, real gas or ethenol blend).
However we DO have the same gas tank (21.1 gallons/80 liters) and once we know how many gallons are in the tank at each gauge level, then we can calculate how many miles we can travel before running out.

Last week I again topped off when the gauge was on the 1/4 tank line and again I put in just over 13 gallons (13.3)... It is pretty clear that 1/4 tank on the gauge is really closer to 8 gallons (vs. 1/4 of 21 or 5.25 gallons).

The E Light comes on when there is 4 gallons in the tank and the gauge is on E (the E Line) when there is about 2.5 gallons still in the tank... I haven't waited to that point too many times to get a lot of repeated 2.5's

    From the other thread:

Know your mileage ('kilometerage') while driving using only your trip odometer and fuel gauge!

    21.1 gallon (80 liter) tank.

    Reset odometer at fill up.

When gauge needle is firmly over the 3/4 tank line, you have consumed 5 gallons (19 liters).

    If your trip odometer is reading 75 miles (120 kms.) = 15 mpg (6.3 km/l) 15.83 L/100Km
    If reading 80 miles (128 kms.) = 16 mpg (6.7 km/l)14.84 L/100Km
    If reading 85 miles (136 kms.) = 17 mpg (7.1 km/l)13.97 L/100Km
    If reading 90 miles (144 kms.) = 18 mpg (7.6 km/l)13.19 L/100Km
    If reading 95 miles (152 kms.) = 19 mpg (8.0 km/l)12.5 L/100Km
    If reading 100 miles (160 kms.)= 20 mpg (8.4 km/l)11.88 L/100Km
    If reading 105 miles (168 kms.)= 21 mpg (8.8 km/l)11.31 L/100Km

    If reading 115 miles (184 kms.)= 23 mpg (9.7 km/l)10.33 L/100Km

When gauge is over the 1/2 tank line, you have consumed 9 gallons (34 liters) as our gauge reads less than what really is in the tank (allows room for a 'reserve' amount of fuel when on E... 2.5 gallons (9.5 liters).

    At 135 miles (216 km) = 15 mpg (6.3 k/l)15.74 L/100Km

    at 171 miles (274 km) = 19 mpg (8.0 k/l)12.41 L/100Km
    at 180 miles (288 km) = 20 mpg (8.4 k/l)11.81 L/100Km

Well my gas gage was about a needle width below the E line and it was like that for 20-40 miles and I went to fill up and put in 20.773 gallons.:D
I'd say the tank was empty.

If you want to know within 1/2 gal get the ultra gauge and monitor it that way.

It is pretty consistant... within 0.5 gallon...
    PER THE GAUGE:
at 3/4 tank you are down 5 gallons (16 in tank)
at 1/2 tank you are down 9 gallons (12 in tank)
at 1/4 tank you are down 13 gallons (8 in tank)
at E light you are down 17 gallons (4 in tank)
at E line you are down 18.5 gallons (2.5 in tank)

Is the department of weights and measurements on the take in your state? The Tacoma only holds 21.1 gallon when bone dry.

The light goes on when you have ~4 gallons remaining... If you get 20 mpg, then you could go ~80 more miles before running out. At that figure, the most you could put in is 20.6 gallons (1/2 gallon remaining for the 10 miles from 70 to 80 miles to empty).

With the thousands of Tacoma drivers on here... It is interesting that NOBODY but this fellow in Louisiana has ever put 22 gallons in their tank.

I would sure love to hear from someone who has run out... and can tell us how much they put in to fill it... anyone?

As for my ongoing observations... the gauge is holding true, and I will try and make a handy chart of the gallons/ miles at each level.

So far, the 21 gallon tank has (+/- 0.5 gallon):

16 gallons at the 3/4 full gauge line (down 5 gallons)
12 gallons at the 1/2 full gauge line (down 9)
8 gallons at the 1/4 tank line. (down 13)
    4 gallons at the E-LIGHT (down 17)
2.5 gallons at the E LINE (down 18.5)

IF you want to see what kind of gas mileage you are getting, as you drive:

    Reset odometer at fill up.

When gauge needle is firmly over the 3/4 tank line, you have consumed 5 gallons (19 liters).

    If your trip odometer is reading 75 miles (120 kms.) = 15 mpg (6.3 km/l) 15.83 L/100Km
    If reading 80 miles (128 kms.) = 16 mpg (6.7 km/l)14.84 L/100Km
    If reading 85 miles (136 kms.) = 17 mpg (7.1 km/l)13.97 L/100Km
    If reading 90 miles (144 kms.) = 18 mpg (7.6 km/l)13.19 L/100Km
    If reading 95 miles (152 kms.) = 19 mpg (8.0 km/l)12.5 L/100Km
    If reading 100 miles (160 kms.)= 20 mpg (8.4 km/l)11.88 L/100Km
    If reading 105 miles (168 kms.)= 21 mpg (8.8 km/l)11.31 L/100Km
    If reading 110 miles (176 kms.)= 22 mpg (9.2 km/l)10.80 L/100Km
    If reading 115 miles (184 kms.)= 23 mpg (9.7 km/l)10.33 L/100Km

When gauge is over the 1/2 tank line, you have consumed 9 gallons (34 liters) as our gauge reads less than what really is in the tank (allows room for a 'reserve' amount of fuel when on E... 2.5 gallons (9.5 liters).

    At 135 miles (216 km) = 15 mpg (6.3 k/l)15.74 L/100Km
    at 144 miles (230 km) = 16 mpg (6.7 k/l)14.78 L/100Km
    at 153 miles (245 km) = 17 mpg (7.1 k/l)13.88 L/100Km
    at 162 miles (259 km) = 18 mpg (7.6 k/l)13.13 L/100Km
    at 171 miles (274 km) = 19 mpg (8.0 k/l)12.41 L/100Km
    at 180 miles (288 km) = 20 mpg (8.4 k/l)11.81 L/100Km
    at 189 miles (302 km) = 21 mpg (8.9 k/l)11.26 L/100Km
    at 198 miles (317 km) = 22 mpg (9.3 k/l)10.72 L/100Km
    at 207 miles (331 km) = 23 mpg (9.7 k/l)10.27 L/100Km

When the gauge is over the 1/4 tank line, you have consumed 13 gallons:

    at 195 miles = 15 mpg
    at 208 miles = 16 mpg
    at 221 miles = 17 mpg
    at 234 miles = 18 mpg
    at 247 miles = 19 mpg
    at 260 miles = 20 mpg
    at 273 miles = 21 mpg
    at 286 miles = 22 mpg
    at 299 miles = 23 mpg
