    I didn't even notice that it changed, maybe it is related to BS&T.

    For a second I thought I got banned again; Was posting "test" messages in my own threads in General Automotive to see if it brought my message back, and it was telling me "you do not have permission to perform this action" after a couple times...

    @shakerhood

    Also, I’m honestly worried that I may have pushed my truck a bit too hard by putting 18K miles on it in a year and going an extra 2,000+ miles between oil changes, and that’s why I lost a quart...

    I think the interval is 5K on the 2nd Gen. I even used to take a paint marker and write the mileage on the filter.

    And what do you think of the “test” situation?

    After talking to my uncle who was a mechanic for many years, I have determined that my truck likely is not using oil...

    It would appear that my mechanic (not the one who did the brake work) neglected to put at least half a quart of oil in last time I got my oil changed!

    I will NOT be getting the oil changed at 110K like I was thinking of doing, and will instead be going all the way to 114K like I originally planned. I will be monitoring the oil level every 1,000 miles or every month (whichever comes first). If my truck doesn’t “use” any oil at all in the next 4,000 miles, then I’ll know what the problem is!

    @PennSilverTaco

    A few winters ago the Mustang had been sitting 61 days without running. My shoes had snow on them and I was trying not to get the carpet messed up. Turned the key and just as the car fired my foot slipped and nailed the throttle, revving to 5 grand on a super cold engine is never good, but it's been totally fine since. I think your oil situation will be no problem, wouldn't worry too much about it. I would just stick to the recommended 5K intervals and you will be good to go.

    I’m gonna so with 7K; Uncle says changing every 5K on full synthetic is a waste of money.

    0W-20 only comes in synthetic, why would the manual recommended 5K if it's a waste?

    I agree. And if it were my rig I would use Mobil's high mileage formula. M1 HM 5/30 works very well in my daughter's decade old Yaris with 150k on it. It will be what I run in the Taco as I get closer to 100k miles

    I would be careful with high mileage blends as those have additives which specifically target old seals (rear main is the biggie here), those additives cause swelling and unwanted leakage of those seals shortly down the road sometimes, so by doing something which you may think is good, you end up doing the opposite inadvertently instead.

    I currently am at 117K on my taco and see no reason to switch to a high mileage blend. That being said, I do my own work since I am a mechanic full time, and while preservation of seals is important to me to avoid doing unwanted work, at the end of the day, it's not the end of the world if I have to replace a seal or gasket either, more just an annoying inconvenience than anything since the labor is free. Lol.

    I’m still very paranoid about using anything other than what’s recommended though...

    I'm aware of that. But M1 HM gets high marks on Bobistheoilguy site. It's on the thicker side of the 5/30 spectrum and had added detergents. And it's seal and gasket conditioners help to keep them a bit more pliable....not swell them.

    Zero issues over the years using it

    Since you’re a mechanic, does that mean you get to smog test your own vehicle?

    Also Bill, did you see my other post? Sounds more like a case of human error than anything wrong with my truck.

    My '09 was spec'd for 5/30. Do you really believe that Toyota made some kind of magical change in the engine's internals between 2009 and 2010? The recommendation was revised for efficiency reasons

    Yes...I saw it. Regardless...waiting 2 months in between oil checks isn't smart. Park the truck on a level surface and let it sit for about 15 minutes or more. Grab a paper towel and check it. Ain't rocket science
