My dealer refused to disable the chime. I called corporate and opened a case. Once i told them that i did that they immediately disable the chime

I believe the rear diffs are manufactured in Thailand.

Maybe we should pool together some funds for a third party engineering company to investigate and devise a real fix for this. Toyota obviously doesn't care.

I don't think my gear whine was as bad as a lot of others, but my 2006 whined, then I put an ECGS 3rd in it with a locker and it wined just the same. My 16 sounds the same, and I imagine it will after it gets ECGS 3rds on both ends. I chalked it up to a general Tacoma quirk.

Yeah I don't think it's the loudness of the whine that's annoying, more the frequency and steadiness of it. It's a tone that just cuts through everything in the cab, including the radio. I'm convinced if we blasted it over propaganda speakers to our enemies we could end WW3 inside a week, tops. :D

I feel like I'm pretty reasonable. I have mild all terrain tires with a live axle, so I expect noise. I just feel like it was excessive and, for now, it's far more in line with what I expect.

Yeah I consider my noise excessive too. Driven plenty of Toyota trucks my whole life, as well as a Nissan Xterra (also leaf spring and live axle). None of them were even close to as noisy as my new Taco.

I added some sound deadening to the back wall of my cab (stick on rubber kind). Really helped with diff wine and helped with some general highway noise too. Well worth the money.

I've had 6 Tacomas since 1999, and all the later ones had the whine, and never lost a third member. I don't hear it after a while.

Does your current truck have it? If so, can you describe the conditions that set it off and how loud it is (i.e. what radio volume is needed to drown it out)?

It does have the sound, especially doing downhill about 50 mph, just like my 2013.

I used this. It only helps with vibrations and isn't a true sound deadener. Don't expect miracles but it makes a difference. You can go more extreme and add foam and mass loaded vinyl if you want to really quiet it down but this was enough to make me happy.

I fixed my rear diff whine with a chopped exhaust and mud tires. Can't even hear it
