Transmission Oil Leak? Help!

Hello Taco World.

Im new to this, sry if this is in the wrong thread.

Ive been having transmission problems with my 2003 Toyota Tacoma for a few months now.
At first, whenever I suddenly stop the car and then push the accelerator again, the truck would rev up as if its in neutral and only then click into gear and jerk forward. Ive solved this before by simply adding transmission fluid.... which left me thinking. Where is it going?! does it evaporate???

Heres the deal. I only now started noticing oil on my driveway.. here's pix.

It seems that the transmission.. or at least the rear part of it is leaking somewhere and I have no clue what to tighten or where to start please help!



There are two drops of oil on the right of the image. (right is front of car) The red gunk on the left seems to be a gasket or a seal.



This is the lower part of the transmission (right is front of car) There are also visible drops at some places.
On the bottom of the image, there are two more drops on the small black cover



Ive also noticed that theres TRANSMISSION OIL on my GAS TANK. Is this stuff squirting out? Is that possible?

Somebody please help.. Where is my leak, is it an easy fix? What do I gotta do?

Chris, doesn't that look like a picture of the transfer case, and not the transmission?

OP, is your truck a 2x4 or 4x4?

 

Alright OP, I think Chris will be logged off for a little while.

If it's the rear seal in the transmission, you can put in a transmission stop leak oil. Sometimes it helps, but I have heard it usually results in leaking again.
I've never replaced one before, so I don't know if you can leave the transmission in and replace the seal, or if you have to completely take out the trans and replace. Hopefully someone can clarify on that.

If it's the transfer case, you can try tightening a little on some of those bolts and see if that helps. Might also be a good idea to put in new oil. It also appears to be re-built, did you buy used? May have been worked on before, and maybe they didn't apply the gasket material correctly, or didn't torque the bolts right, or both. That's if I'm looking at a picture of a transfer case.
If it still leaks you'll have to end up taking it in. They'll take it apart and replace with new gasket material. If you plan on not using 4 wheel drive ever, you don't have to worry about it. But I would highly recommend getting it fixed, you just never know if you'll have to use it!

That appears to be rust on the gas tank cover, and not oil of some kind. You can remove the cover and sand and paint. But I'm not sure if by removing the bolts will result in dropping the tank too, I don't own a 1st Generation not familiar with it. But don't sand when it's attached.

Hopefully others that know more can comment on this and help you figure this stuff out. And welcome to TW.com

Yeah, would be best to get it replaced instead of the stop leak oil.

 

YES thats it. Its the transfer case.

The truck is a 4x4 purchased brand new.

It probably is an old gasket thats leaking I'll try tightening the bolts tho.

and surprisingly that IS oil on the tank lol
I have no idea how, but I wipe it off with a white towel and its definitely the same pink stuff that I put in the transmission.
