Hard to say. I work for a company and been with them for 15 years. Without a college education and moving to a larger city, nobody can touch what I make in a years time.

Paid time off is very nice to have as I get between holidays and discretionary time 25 days a year plus off every weekend but 4 saturdays a year. 401k is a huge deal to me as it’s been a huge success and I’d hate to lose that benefit but if you’re going to lose contributions for only 2/3 years then it’s not life changing. Personally I like staying with one company but that’s just me.

As for taking off without pay, that’s a touchy thing. Many sub contractors can’t stand when people miss so I’d make dang sure something was in writing allowing you to miss a certain amount of time if needed. If not they could end your employment without notice.

If it were me, I’d put it all on paper. Yearly salary now vs new job. Then factor in what the company you work for now gives you in benefits. After all the numbers are crunched see if it’s worthwhile if you take 20 days off each year compared to what you’re getting now. Then most importantly, talk it over with family see what they think. I know my wife and kids would be upset if we didn’t get to take as much time off as we’re allowed now due to the things we do as a family like vacations and sport and other events we choose to attend.

Yeah, the PTO and 401K are the only 2 things that give me pause. 401K matching isn't that big of a deal as long as I contribute the max allowed for a 35 yr. old. The diff in pay will still have me making significatly more money. The PTO thing is a different story, b/c I do take 1 week a year to go on vacation. Now the company works a 9/80 so I get every other friday off just like I do now. I worked this way for years, so I plan everything around getting things done on my off friday. I can also flex that Friday to any other day during the week incase something comes up w/ kids that I need to take care of. Also, I've never worked anywhere more than 3 years, so most times I loose most of the 401K match anyway.

I will of course talk it over with my wife, but being that she's a teacher and has no clue how the rest of the world works she will ultimately just trust my judgement.

I worked for SAIC at Ft. McClellan, under Homeland Security. It was a great job with great benefits and great pay. I was a salary employee as opposed to an hourly employee, so YMMV. I know there's a SAIC in Huntsville somewhere. Which location you thinking about?

King of Hammers is awesome! I love those Ultra 4s. I'd have one of those over a rock buggy if I had choice.

There are actually 4 SAIC locations in HSV. It will be on the Battle field contract doing Test Engineering. At some point in the future, I might be able to go full time with them from the contractor company, but not sure when.

I know guys who do something similar at Northrop where I am now. I'll probably ask some of the ones I trust tomorrow. Just thought you guys might have some insight.

I was with the Center for Domestic Preparedness and the Cobra facility. SAIC's specialty at Ft. McClellan was all nuclear, biological and chemical training. Disaster preparedness basically, so it's a total different segment from what you are looking for.

I think maybe you misunderstood why I was asking. I have a job offer in hand. I have to review it and give an answer by COB Friday.

I assume you'll be working in Huntsville if you accept the offer? You'll have to weigh the pros and cons of staying at your previous job, and taking this new job. Good luck in your decision!

@Brian422 I put up 225 lbs 6 times today for my finishing set on flat bench. Not bad for a 45 year old 175lb guy eh?

Man, not bad at all. especially for your weight! Good job! Is that a personal record?

Im about right at a pretty lean 180lb right now. If i had to guess about 11%bf Bench is right at 315 for 1 and squat at 385 for 1. Hope to get it back to 400 soon. Last time i tested 225 for reps i did about 13 but i was about 10 pounds heavier than i am now lol.

My personal best was 315 for one rep, when I was in my late 20s. Not sure what my max is on squat though. Not really trying to max out, just building endurance right now. Jeannie and I are hitting the gym pretty hard nowadays, at least 4-5 times a week, and Krav Maga twice a week.

Ain't nothing wrong with that. That's all we did in the Army, was push ups, sit ups, pull ups and running. It would turn fat guys slim, and make slim guys bulk up!

Nice! 315 is a good goal to have on bench! squats is one of those lifts that suck and i only do them still because i like to test my overall strength. When i get older i probably wont do them anymore lol.

When i was in college i beefed up to 260lbs and had my lifetime bests on all my lifts. 420 on bench 585 on squats 550 on DL.
God i was string but honestly too fat lol. But it was for sports so it was all good. Now im more about relative strength than overall strength. Im way stronger pound for pound than i was in college.

i've never understood how people can be stronger on squats than deadlifts, but maybe that's because I can deadlift more than squat.

mines bench 330 / squat 425 / deadlift 545, but that was back in 2017 maybe.
