Gonna be running 285/75R16 on my 3rd gen Tacoma DCSB. Has anyone successfully put a 285 in the stock spare tire location? I have searched and found very little and was wondering if anyone is doing this and how the clearance is. I figure for any serious offroading I can always take it out and strap it to my roof basket if I need to but at the same time would also like it to have a more permanent location. My issue is that I can't do a tire carrier on the back because the tongue of my trailer I pull is too short and would contact the tire if it were on the back. I really like the Wilco Offroad prerunner tiregate but also don't want to sacrifice losing my tailgate and having to remount the backup camera. I'm thinking if I can get it in the stock spare tire location that would be good for daily driving but I also am going to be running a CBI Rear Bumper as well so wondering if it is going to hang too low. Would love to see some pictures of if anyone has actually done that and the clearance. Any help appreciated!

Did you guys have to cut/modify your exhaust ? I threw my 285/70/17's up in there and it was super close (less than 1/2") to the exhaust and didn't want to melt rubber, so have it off for now. I'm thinking about getting some exhaust wrap or a motorcycle exhaust heat sleeve and throw it on there. Any tips appreciated.

I put a 285/75/16 up there and it's not exactly a perfect fit. But it doesn't stick out to far, does the job, and definitely gives me peace of mind

Thanks, my 285/70/17 fits in there like a glove. Maybe hangs low a little. I'm just worried about the proximity to the exhaust since it may melt the rubber. The tire tech told me he doesn't recommend leaving it that close to the exhaust because he's seen a couple guys have the rubber melt on the spot right next to the pipe.

Got it for $50 to get me from point a to point b if I ever need to use it... 100-200 miles tops. But to concerned about it being worn out

    ever touch that exhaust portion?

After driving about an hour or so was curious if it was going to be a problem so went to see. Its hot to the touch, but not that hot. You can touch it without burning yourself but if you held your hand there it might burn a bit. Kind of like a black car on a hot summer day. Sure its hot to the touch and hurts a little, but not hot enough to damage a tire.

Besides there's another piece of metal there that I'm guessing is supposed to be a bit of a heat shield

Well, how about deflating the spare down to 10 PSI? Assuming you have a compressor onboard.

would 265/75/16 as a spare work... it'll still be the same height when used and will not hang as low with the 285's when stored
