I have a friend who lives in the Phoenix area who's mother was diagnosed with severe cancer and only a few months left to live. Her and her partner are hoping to offset some of their travel cost. They're driving in a shortbed 4x4 F150 with most of the bed open for cargo. Any items that aren't to heavy and to expensive to ship by conventional methods. It wouldn't be free but somewhere around a 50% savings. As of right now the planned route is,
    From Phoenix I-10 E. Take I-20 E, I-85 N, I-95 N, NJ Tpke and I-95 to NY,NY same route back.

Do they have a topper to secure what they’re transporting?

No. They're driving straight thru. So no overnight motels. The truck is lifted 4 inches with 35s on it. Makes it tough to see in the back. She does have a cross bed toolbox that locks.

Wow! That’s a long drive to go straight through. Obviously shared driving, but still...

Yep! I've done it a few times using different routes. That one will probably be about 48 hours of driving. Either way, best of luck to them.

Thank you. The reason their going that route is to avoid high altitude. One of them has breathing issues at higher altitudes due to lung issues.
That's what cigarettes will do to you kids....
