I'm looking into getting a Soft Topper, mainly because I can remove it easily if I need to.

Any concerns about it getting stolen off the street? Or has anyone ever had one stolen off their truck?

I’d probably be more concerned about vandalism than theft.

    Like slashing windows?

Edit: Or just slashing anywhere on it I guess.

Yeah, more the latter. I’ve never heard of one being stolen or vandalized, but I would consider it a possibility. I’ve been thinking about getting one for an upcoming trip this summer and I’ve come to the conclusion that I probably should not rely on them for any sort of security.

I think you have a better chance of getting your tailgate stolen than having your soft topper. I had mine for more than 6months? But I bought it used. and it looks pretty beat up WORKS LIKE A CHARM THOUGH !!!

I have owned 6 Softoppers. Never an issue with having the complete top stolen.
I have had the back zipper opened on overnights in hotel parking lots. We never leave anything of value in the bed overnight. On the same evening my truck bed was searched for valuables, a friends hard shell topper was broken into and caused 500.00 in glass damage and over 1500.00 in tools/parts.

The same shit everyone else has.
I had one for 3 years no issue.

I just wouldn’t leave anything valuable in it

Got it. General consensus is it’s fine, just don’t leave anything in there. Mainly just want the option of a covered bed because Oregon. Thanks everyone! I’ll let you know how it goes!

I’m hoping you have dogs. They love the softopper.

Love my Softtopper! My plan is to build a drawer system that either locks or install a Pop and Lock tailgate handle that doesn't allow access to the drawers unless the tailgate is down. That way, some valuables can still be locked and stored in the bed.

As for the topper itself, if someone really wants it, they're gonna get it. People can be dicks.

I've been thinking about some way to lock the tailgate so that my crap would be inaccessible under my sleeping platform too. Thieves are mostly lazy, if they have to move or rearrange a bunch of stuff, they'll probably look for easier targets.

In the insurance replacement industry I replaced quite a few Jeep soft tops and I always told them that they should make it really obvious their top was unsecured by leaving windows partially open because quite a few tops were sliced when the vehicle wasn't even locked. It's just too easy to cut soft tops.

And 1st gen Tacoma owners to not latch their sliding rear windows because they're so easy to break open and theives know it.

I’ve owned two now and never had an issue. Follow the advice already given by the other members and you’ll be fine.

The softopper once removed is so bulky and unmanageable to carry that someone would have to be really committed to steal it haha

also, I really like the idea of the locking tailgate and sleeping platform with storage.. thanks for the new project

I loved my softopper for my Tacoma enough that I bought one for the superduty.

I have a pop-n-lock tailgate handle, tailgate hose clamp mod, and cargo netting around the bed. I think the biggest theft deterrent for me is having a DCLB vs the more common SBs in my area.
