It seems to me that they are not marketing this as a hard use offroad vehicle, hence the SR5 trim and not the TRD-Offroad trim. It seems to be marketed to the guys who are outdoorsy in that they like to get outside on the weekends but also use this as a daily driver. These guys probably don't use their bed a ton and have no need for crawl control or a locking differential. They probably hit some dirt or gravel roads, maybe the occasional light trail, on their way to their camping/fishing/hunting spots. For these guys having a cooler and some storage built in is perfect for their weekend trips and the air dam will help with MPGs.

If we are all being honest I bet a lot more of us would fit into this category than we would care to admit. Its not like this is replacing the off-road trim, just another option for people with different uses

The dust coming off the tire makes it seem really rugged, definitely hardcore.
I would hope they make the Cooler/storage boxes available as some sort of add on package and not standard as this will only appeal to a small percentage of people imo. I personally wouldn't find it useful. I have a Double cab, i can fold the seats down and put my own cooler in there if i need to.

I’m pretty sure that’s an error in the press release. The nightshade Taco has 18”, the trail clearly has 16”.

Toyota USA in Plano needs a better technical editor. You know, someone that actually knows their product. I volunteer.

They appear to be lockable so this isn't a whole lot different from the tool boxes people keep in the back of their truck (in terms of occupying bed space). If your tool box can double as a cooler too, why not? I'm not surprised by any of the negative reactions, though, because they definitely fucked up by marketing these as coolers instead of tool boxes.

This cooler thing seems to be a pretty huge trend in the auto industry right now. Anyone see this stupid Ford Mustang Mach-E marketing stunt?

I hadn't seen this^ before. I like it, and it's long enough for tools, camping gear, etc. If there was a Taco with this on it, I'd pay more for it.

The Taco version the OP linked to sure does eat up a lot of bed space, but so did trucks with large flaresides back in the day, and plenty of people bought those too. There're plenty of guys on here that basically never use their bed -- let them have their own special edition for once!
