Got a slight squeek! Ahhhhh

135k V6 ‘04 pre runner

Developed a slight squeak in recent weeks. Maybe need to lube my drive shaft? Replace wheel bearings? Does not appear to be suspension related thus far.

Seems to happen mostly around 45-65 mph, can toggle the squeek sound a bit by accelerating/decelerating but it’s more pronounced around 45-65mph. Indication i need to lube my shaft? Seems like if wheel bearings were going out it’d squeek at all speeds or be more distinguishable at lower speeds?

When do wheel bearings go out generally?

And what type of lube you guys using on driveshaft components , carrier bearings, drive shaft, and whatever other moving parts are down there that should be lubed

Sorry, I don't have any experience with the front/rear bearings.

For my double cab, I'm using Valvoline Full Synthetic moly-fortified grease for the cardinal join zerk fittings (3). I don't think your's has a cardinal joint because it doesn't look like a dbl cab.
With the exception of the rear slip yoke, I'm using Amsoil Synthetic NLGI#2 red grease.
I was using the Valvoline Full Synthetic moly-fortified on the slip yoke, but last year started using Genuine Ford Fluid XG-8 PTFE Lubricant.

Just a heads up
Extended cabs have a double Cardon joint which is easily missed and expensive to replace

By extended cab are you referring to double cab or access cab?

 

Extended is Access cab.

-Double cab is 4 doors on these 1st Gens

Bought grease gun and grease this afternoon.
On my access cab pre runner I found 5 zerk fittings - 1 up front where shaft connects to transmission , 3 in the middle (photo) and 1 down near the rear where shaft connects to rear dif. Could I be missing any?


don’t have proper setup for slip yoke at least no torque wrench that goes up to 60+ ft lbs. might do this later..

Taking it on test drive I didn’t notice any sound of any squeak or ping of any kind, so that’s good news. Solved? Seems like it so far, fingers crossed

sometimes mine developed a squeak when the center bearing was going out. I've replaced it 5 times or so in 330k miles.

 

Dang how will you know it’s time to replace, by the sound just getting worse and worse? Or until it fails or somethin

 

it doesn't always squeal. I've had one have the rubber disintegrate and the only clue was a clunking from the drive shaft hitting the side of the center bearing cage. its best to just change them at regular intervals or check them as part of an overall vehicle inspection every couple oil changes. any cracking in the rubber or noise from the bearing indicates you need to change it very soon. they're about 80 bucks for a good one. see the sticky at the top of the 1st gen section for all you need to know about buying and replacing.
