Howdy y’all! I was reading about the special editions for the 2021 Toyota trucks: midnight & trail. The trail edition is essentially the SR5 trims given some off road aesthetics...HOWEVER! Both the Tundra & Tacoma get these new lockable bed-side storage containers, with the left side an insulated cooler!

I’ve been trying to consider a smart way to store tools, besides hanging my tool backpack on the bed cleat, as well as figuring out a smarter way to work with coolers in the summer during band camp. It may seem to take up some space around the wheel wells, but if you haven’t been able to find a smart solutions such as those, especially with us short bed owners, this seems like a practical solution to store whatever good we need to.

A problem I noticed include using some type of tonneau cover (i.e. bakflip mx4) where the bed rail system is mounted a little lower for the cover, it doesnt seem there would be enough room for these boxes. That may be the only hinderance for these.

If you zoom in close enough, it seems like these boxes are add ons; they are not one unit as part of the composite bed. So, will Toyota sell this as a separate part we can install on our ‘16-‘20 trucks? What are your thoughts?

They could market the passenger side piece as a "ballast box" to even out the Taco lean.

Nice idea but a little bulky. Would be better IMO if the boxes were narrower and only as wide as the wheel well humps. Also seems hard to access from the bed side. Needs to be the height of the bed rail and the rail track system could be mounted to the box instead.

Sure looks like a lot of lost space for something that is barely two cans wide. I like the concept though, I need storage in the bed for tools and other misc. items but don't want to lose the length of the bed so something running front to back would be ideal for me. Maybe we'll see someone come up with a better solution, who knows

It does look like the bottom of the box is notched to fit over the bed ridge, so it's entirely possible it's a bolt-in item. Looks like it is secured partially by the rear tie down.

That cooler can't possibly hold enough beer for me on a weekend camp trip.

I’ve been considering getting the Milwaukee pack out compact boxes for tool storage above tree wheel wells. They make a mounting plate thats wide for the regular stuff, so I’d have to cut that in half, then screw down each half above either wheel into the bed. Little much, but it would work to easily local those tool boxes in while being able to easily take them on the go.

The only advantage these have over the RamBox is the fact the RamBox open from the top of the bed, those of us with Toppers would never be able to use it. This is just bad in every other way though.

If I had to put money on it, I bet these could be removed with three bolts - the tie down at the back, the tie down at the front side, and one of the bolts that secures the bed to the rail. If that's the case, it could be a decent sometimes add-on, but I bet it would be stupid expensive as a part.

Just like the newer 8” radio...$4K for that alone, the boxes would probably end up as much as a truck cap or something stupid

There is an easy way to get around that, I never ask for help moving stuff, therefore no one ever asks me to move stuff for them.

I like em. I've got the swing cases, these seem like they'd be better.
