I find the LR2000 to be rather clunky, but there is good info to be had there. Good luck!

Alright, so I ordered the ML Vanquish 540 today. I'm excited. First place I'm gonna hit is a section of old woods that they just cleared in my neighborhood. Probably nothing there, but I'm gonna check.

Have fun! Hey- There’s guy on the prospectordetector.com forum that has been finding a bunch of really cool 100+ year old coins at a old sports field along the sidelines and near the goal ends, may be worth trying to check out local sports fields too if they let you do it.

Reading this thread makes me want to dust mine off, use to be top of the list hobby. Carpal Tunnel in my wrists kinda moved it down some. Still got my whites 6000. Use to hunt the farm fields around Ft Gibson pretty hard for Dragoon buttons, bullets ect

I use to go to different libraries, look for books on local history. Lots of good info. Make copies of maps, old pics. Prob can do same online now, you can drive around the country in early spring, look for daffodils blooming, most likely use to be a house there

You might start at your local museum. Look for old maps, books, and documents that reference the early years of towns.

    Thanks, fellas.
A quick www search shows me that the 3rd oldest city in SC is right near me. Georgetown, SC founded in 1729 and became an official port in 1732. It also seems that there is lots of Revolutionary war history there. This might get interesting. I know several folks with land in and around Georgetown.

The guy that runs the following site has a bunch of live digs on YouTube. He knows quite a bit about detecting and locating good places to detect.
He also offers an online course all about detecting and locating sites which, two or three years ago was $50. I sprang for it and got a lot of insight into the hobby.
He has another module out but I have not bought in.

I started reading all I can find about epithermal deposited ore written by Jim Strait. Has anyone here heard of him? I’m just shy of a couple hours drive away from the Rand Mountains, one of his favorite haunts for that type of deposit, and the probable locale of the “Mojave nugget”. Just curious if anyone has ever prospected in that area near Randsburg California. If so, how did it go? Did you run into any issues with access and good areas to detect in?

I have prospected in the Gohler Wash area a number of times with some success. Have done the best running a dry washer. The detecting can be rough as it is a popular spot and plenty of folks from SoCal get in there. And there is plenty of iron trash. I know a guy who knows a guy who detected up an 8 once nugget in that area.
I found my first nugget at an old prospect near Red Mountain.
I recommend you subscribe to the ICMJ magazine.

I will add that I know of at least three prospecting clubs which hold regular club outings in that area. The region gets a lot of pressure, but there is gold to be had.
