Best registry /spyware repair programs...............

Anyone running any of these programs?...........I have looked on cnet downloads but their are just so many to choose from.....any suggestions?.......Any worth paying for as well?.............At one time I ran webroot software and it seemed to be ok................Thanks.........

x2 on spybot. i use ace utilities for registry repair stuff, though many people say that those type programs create more issues than they fix.

 

Agreed. The best registry repair is to have a backup or have preventative measures in place.

ccleaner is my recommendation as well. Works well and it's free.

 

You just have to buy an overpriced PC to get it.

 

At work we run MalwareBytes on almost everything that comes through the office. It is pretty effective and the live verison is at a good price for the quality of protection it provides.

I have had good luck with CCleaner also, just I tend to backup my computer on a pretty regular basis. I guess that is a perk of working in an IT shop.

Fedora 13 Linux

Now I'm going to try bleachbit, mostly because I'm curious if it actually does anything worthwhile on a linux system.

 

Ok, I just looked through bleachbit's linux functions. Not many of them. IMO, waste of time for a linux system. It's doing things like wiping recent document logs, temporary files, etc. All those are wiped on system shutdown anyway. The actual log files you don't want to wipe, plus they have low max size limits anyway. It will also wipe thumbnails, which is also a time waster as they will be regenerated as soon as you reenter the folder anyway, and you'll be using unnecessary cpu time waiting for them.

The only possibly useful function is the system memory wipe. This one is only useful if you've got a program on your system leaking ram and need to reclaim it. Otherwise, wiping the ram and the swap is silly. The data there is going to need to be recached anyway while you are waiting...

All that being said, this is probably a fairly useful program for windows. Many windows apps will log/cache stuff ad ridiculum. Also, a much larger portion of windows apps leak ram, so the memory function would be more helpful if you don't want to reboot your system.

 

Wow, sounds like Ubuntu's default install is translation happy. I just didn't install the additional language packs on my fedora system. *shrug*

I use both Spybot S&D and Ad-Aware SE. Both seem to get what the other misses. I use AVG Free anti-virus and have NEVER had a virus problem. I can also recommend Bluecoat K-9 for content blocking. All these are free.

Let me just say this - while the programs mentioned above are probable not rated the "best" in the industry, they are pretty good and there is no reason not to have them running since they are free. The most important protection is you. If you follow good web surfing practices you probably be safe.

I work in the IT shop of a huge government agency that has some killer blocking and anti-virus software running. Rarely does anything ever get by our firewalls and content blocking software - and we get 1000's of hits every hour from "bad" people all over the world trying to break in. We also block porn and other questionable websites.

Those that work in the porn industry are low-lifes and have no problem trying to infect your computer. Stay out of porn, use the free protection software above, and you won't have a problem. If you visit porn on your computer then you will eventually get infected. I guarantee it will eventually happen. I'm not trying to give you a moral lesson here it is just a fact of life on the internet.
