If my `98 doesn't have Daytime Running Lights... does anyone know what parts of the system I do or do not have?

Specifically, the wiring diagram shows a DRL module in the dash somewhere and wiring. Are the wires there? DRL module? (I suspect I'll need to dig around and see but no garage and it is rainy season)

End goal: convert corner lights to daytime running lights.

(Mostly... I might want to make them blink with turn signal as well, but that magic is on me independent of what I'm asking)

I might be missing something but if the 1998 has corner lights like my 2000. I think they would make poor daytime running lights.

On my 2000 I added COB LED daytime running lights with an automatic on and a timed delay off........it might work for you.

Yeah, I've got some pretty bright LEDs in mine. But also looking to do something altogether different next, too.

You could just add an LED strip where the headlight filler plate is.

I have the LED strips with an ignition sensing module with a timed delay off (running lights stay on for about 10 - 12 seconds after truck is shut off )

The modules on eBay are real cheap, maybe $3-4. The modules on my two vehicles are 4-5 years old and still work great.

Corner lights will not work effectively as DRL. When you relocate blinkers to corner lights (possible as @jbrandt showed) your stock blinkers will work perfectly as DRL (with correct wiring). Or you can go bananas and do what I did (notice the inserts under the headlights) :)

All of this is great info, however misses the point... what OEM components from DRL system are in place on a Tacoma not optioned with DRL?

I think what happened we all started out thinking that way back in 1998 there were no DRL’s ......just never thought to say it.

I can answer that, but I do not understand the question, especially the part "components of DRL not optioned with DRL". What do you mean by that?

I think he wants to know what parts of the DRL are already on the truck if that truck doesn't have DRL. Is anything pre-wired and such.

In that case the only part that is common are headlights. All wiring, relays, even fuses are different. Oh, and head relay is the same, but connected differently. In other words if you have factory truck without DRL and you want to convert it to factory DRL it is a major electrical work (including replacing wiring harnesses). And the factory DRL is not that great either - it uses resistor over high beam to make DRL. It is much easier, cheaper and with better outcome to add stand-alone LED DRL system to non-DRL Tacoma. I did it to my Tacoma and 2012 4Runner (4Runner had DRL which is front blinkers being turned on, and that is not legal DRL in Europe).

    Yes! Thanks

Ah, good to know - I'm kind of glad I have to do it all. I was wondering what level of simplicity was employed. I don't have experience with Toyota, but I have seen that many other brands will keep much of the system "common" and add parts as optioned.

I'll probably end up building a wiring harness of my own and a controller with an ESP32 and then control it via a webserver I'd connect to. I'm contemplating using the LED lights from a Charger and then 3D print a new grill (in sections) with clear PET-G. I'd like a white LED strip all the way across the top and then paint the back of the clear plastic elsewhere for effect.

I wanna do the same, since I relocated my running lights into the corners, but Ive just been turning on my parking lights instead for the past several years
