Carmax is not "lowballing". They're giving you a wholesale number, then they sell at retail. You selling at retail is always better. You have to compare numbers apples to apples, not apples to pop tarts.

The 3rd gen is not going to hold it's value well over the long term. I'm already seeing it in private party prices. I venture to say that Toyota adding new features for 2020 like Carplay, terrain cam and a power seat may have made earlier trucks less desirable as the market plays out. If one looks at the 2nd gen there wasn't much of a jump in features from production start till end, which IMO translate to better value retention across the generation.

This doesn't mean a Tacoma is going to depreciate faster than a Ranger or Colorado, but don't expect it to be as good as the first and second gen. Toyota is selling a lot of these trucks.

Just had my 18 TRD OR appraised for 93% of MSRP. 24,000Kms

It had moderate amount of bed wear, 5x5" by 0.5" deep dent in the roof.

 

I would have to agree with him, just saw a tacoma similar as mine, auto sr 2019 4x4 4 doors for 26900 with only 9,000 miles

 

I saw a 2019 DCSB OR 4WD quicksand MT sell for less than 30k with low miles original owner too.

 

Why does TW let the 3rd gen troll continue to post here? I'm guessing He's not even a Tacoma owner and his now EX-girlfriend is getting banged by an actual 3rd gen owner.

Either that or it's VERY slow down at the local GM dealership and the salesmen have to entertain themselves somehow when they aren't surfing for a new job.

 

Let's get it straight. I own a 3rd gen a 2018 Off Road. I'm just not delusional. I think it is the best in class truck, but it has short comings. I'm know some people live through the stuff they own, but i'm not one of them.

I have a 2020 limited with 1100 miles in immaculate condition and carmax offered me 34k, which is high end good value on kbb for a 2019 limited, kbb doesnt have pricing for 2020s yet. Which is really low offer. I went to the toyota dealership and they offered 38k trade in,but wont buy the truck outright. Im toying with the idea of selling mine to downsize to afford a better house and set more aside for my kids

 

Nicer home and saving for your kids? Keep that depreciating asset instead

That's a good point, a lot of this is regional. It's like when I bought my Raptor. In my area (and in pretty much all of the west), there was a $10K-$15K market premium on them. If you went to other parts of the country, you could find them for $5K mark-up and every so often there would be a dealer that would sell their allotment at msrp. Tacomas (really most Toyota 4x4 vehicles) in my area still fetch a premium even on the used market. I'm sure in other parts of the country, as some have stated, they aren't as strong (but still stronger than most).

 

The Raptor bubble has burst. You can easily find $7-10k off MSRP if you are in the market.

 

In my area, for resale value it goes like this:
#1 is for 4runner
#2 tacoma
#3 subarus, people love their subarus over here.
