So I'm planning a solo trip to DV late March. This will be my first time camping alone and I'm really scared LOL. I know I should take this opportunity and do it. Just need a little bit of help!!!

    What inspires you to travel?

I travel alone alot and tbh it is one of my favorite way to adventure. I wake up and do whatever i want and any pace without having to ask for input or compromising. Super agile and very enjoyable

Scared? Just fucking do it. What else do you need?

Find a place, let people know, pack up and go.

I’ve made 8 cross country trips, seen numerous national parks and national forests, drove the ALCAN

I routinely pack up and head out to camp solo. It’s fun, liberating and just serene.

What made you go out solo? I'm planning to go for a whole week.

    Cause I can.

For a week. Def plan accordingly. Water, food, tools and equipment. Are you hiking or going to be with the truck the whole time?

Tell people where you will be and where you’re going and do not deviate from that plan. As tempting as it may be, don’t. Plan for where you want to go next time based off what you see this trip.

Get maps, know locations and have supplies. Have I mentioned water and food? Also, a personal locator beacon.

Were you not scared the first time you went solo?

I'll be hiking 1-2 trails but most the time with the truck. I have the whole area i'm traveling downloaded on Gaia gps. Food and water I already have it planned out. It's going to be tourist season when I get there. I think i'm most scared of is being alone.

Nope, not scared at all. It’s an adventure. New experiences and opportunities.

Once I have enough saved up I’m buying a plane ticket to Iceland and figuring it out once I get there. My plan is a pack, tent, sleeping bag and clothes. Food and camp stove I’ll figure out once I get there.

It’s fun to go and take a leap of faith and find out what you’re capable of. Hardest part is entertaining yourself if you’re alone. Bring books or something to occupy your down time with.

Its my favorite way to get out of my comfort zone, see what I haven't seen, and gain new perspective.

And to experience things like this:

Start simple, but definitely push the boundary a bit. You never know where you'll end up.

Go, enjoy, be on your own schedule and do what you want when you want. My favorite way to travel. Its exciting to go somewhere new by myself. Usually meet new people or do things you might not experience with company. Bring proper clothing food and water. Take the time to clear your mind, reflect and enjoy. Most of all, have fun

Just do it, jump off the corporate treadwheel for a while and just go with the flow, maybe hang out with the locals. One thing about traveling solo, there's no one to complain to you about it being too hot out or too cold or the trails too steep or the waters too rough or anything else beyond your control. And your adventures are in your control.

Here you go; not safe for work.

Like another poster said, do it because you can. Far too many folks these days are scared to get out of their little comfort zones (snowflake safe space) Use some common sense, plan accordingly and have fun. There really aren't that many things out there to actually be scared of when you think about it.

Leave as much of the electronics at home as you can and carry a couple of paperbacks with you. Take your time and do things deliberately, such as actually prepping and cooking meals, not eating crap out of a pouch or fast food. There are plenty of threads on here about the gear most folks carry; you don't really need a lot and it doesn't have to be the best, most expensive stuff out there. "Overlanding" is the current term du jour for overpriced car glamping and you don't need probably three quarters of the expensive crap that folks load their "rigs" down with. Yes, it can make life much more comfortable but you'll figure out what you actually need and want the more you go.

The other thing I'll say about solo travel, which is usually how I travel, is don't get in over your head- it's OK to push your comfort limits, but don't over estimate your or your truck's ability, you'll learn those as you go and they'll both improve the more you go. A good example is Casey from Coyote Works latest video where he's two miles from his destination goal but the road is muddy and he's alone. He's got recovery gear but sometimes prudence is the better part of valor and he wisely decides there's no point in possibly getting stuck with help a long ways away.

    ETA- Risk vs. Reward

This cartoon reminded me of the first time I met my wife some forty five or so years back. She was a city gal, had never camped and as straight laced as they come but I somehow talked her into a three hour drive to the coast to watch the sun pop up over the Atlantic. Since then, we've backpacked, canoed, car camped and trailered over most of the US and still have a lot we want to see. Get started now; you don't want to get my age and have a lot of regrets about things you wish you'd done!

Don’t be afraid. It’s good to get out of your comfort zone. Experience new things. It’s a wonderful world out there. Go for it.

A majority of people live in about a 10 mile bubble 90% of the time. Don’t be those people.

Whether you choose to live beyond that is totally up to you but all it takes is a simple decision to do something different. I think you should choose to meet people not of your kind and see places you aren’t familiar with. If you fly, drive or hike, it doesn’t matter, just get out there. People are cool, places are amazing, experiences are unforgettable, whether shitty or not. Have more experiences in life while you have a life to live. I have traveled a bunch and met some cool people in my life but have also fallen into the funk of work, basic life, etc. myself at times.

My son got sick recently and showed me that you have to live everyday as if it’s your last. Don’t wait around for something like that to happen to you to show you that you should see more of this amazing world we live in!
