Not saying no is being a moron in my opinion, as is failing to utilize the equipment available that will easily save your life. I fly helicopters and have had to make that call to refuse to fly a number of times.

QFT. Here in the VA, only the vets can bag on other vets. The "non-vets" learn pretty quickly which side of that line they're on.
    Corcoran Marauders FTMFW.
You're far more likely to survive a catastrophic mechanical failure in a helicopter because of how autorotation counteracts gravity much more effectively than unpowered glide.
The pilot succumbed to pressure and flew when all industry best practice said otherwise.

    Just say "no" kids.

I’d argue otherwise. In an auto you’re pretty much going to put it on the ground in short order no matter what’s under you, you don’t have a choice, especially at low level. When flying a Piper Warrior in FL I had an engine failure at about 5000 feet. The rough glide ratio is 7:1 so all I had to do was trim out the aircraft and find a place to land somewhere within about 30 miles. At max range airspeed in an auto my helicopter descends at 3000fpm, so that same scenario means I have less than two minutes before hitting the ground rather than a comfortable amount of time to find an airfield within range and land.

Yes.. Wait.. what was the first one?

    Looks worse than it was

Hell yeah, me too! I hadn't seen it in years, like since I was a kid when it came out, and I decided to rewatch it. It's hilarious! I couldn't belove how many jokes I didn't get as a kid

Old ladies to Pugsley: And who's this little lady killer
    Gomez: Aquitted!

    The cockpit definitely is.

Without power I was able to climb to avoid a set of big lines then waited for a gap, and duck between another set. The rotors grabbed one or two small utility lines right before we touched down pulling it into it's side.

Nah, you know what, you're right. Anyone with an instrument rating knows what you need to do if you go IIMC. All my commercial students, even those that don't get their instrument ratings know what to do if they go IIMC. Why this dude didn't check/interpret the weather or immediately climb, call, and find the nearest IFR approach is beyond me.

All I know is that I know FAR more people who have survived helicopter accidents than small aircraft ones. In fact, the number of people I know who have survived small aircraft accidents before today is precisely zero - you would be the first.

Hell, we had this asshole Army Major in Desert Storm who was assigned to the CAOC because he was no longer allowed to fly Cayuse's anymore. Something about how he'd totaled 3 of them. "It's a flying roll cage!" Riiiiiiiight. Pretty sure "helicopter pilot" wasn't actually his life's calling.

I must have hit my head, reminds plz

I'd still much rather crash in a helicopter than an airplane. An airplane in the same situation would have killed everyone on board and likely the people I avoided on the ground.

3000FPM in an auto? What rock are you flying? Hell an R22 is around 1800FPM depending on DA

I will take my dual engine helicopter over a single engine plane any day though. The chances of a dual engine failure are so slim it’s almost unheard of. At lower altitudes I can fly on one engine without much difficulty and have done it, higher altitudes I at least have the power to be in a controlled descent and more controllable landing.

PIC has operational control ultimately and has the final go/no-go decision. He chose to go and it bit him in the ass.

Ceiling was 1100 overcast when they flew over VNY. I was taxiing out of Signature West to position to CMA when they transitioned the class D. Wasn’t bad, but wasn’t great. The Pilot also reported he was in VMC conditions at 1500’ while transitioning, which was false considering I departed VNY about 3 minutes after they departed the airspace. I punched in at about 1000’ and was in solid IMC up to 8000’.

Edit: It is unfortunate that there are operators out there that put pressure like you referenced on the flight crews, but most (in my 20k hours of experience) understand that safety comes first. There is not a single operator out there that wants an accident on their record, especially a charter operator. One bird in the dirt will kill business for a long time. Look at the likes of Universal Jet that changed their name to Universal Aviation after an accident and then became Journey Aviation after putting a GIV in a lake in Caen Capriquet, France a few years ago. Business hasn’t been good for them since.

In the case of Kobe’s crash, the pilot displayed poor judgement and even worse skill when it comes to managing the flight. Every aviator with experience knows that management doesn’t control the flight once pax are on board and the doors are closed and I will raise the BS flag on any report of pressure from management because a good pilot knows better than that and given the nature of the industry, there are plenty of jobs available so walking away wouldn’t hurt the bank at all.
