I just told the story about how I found some Joe’s M4 in a porta shitter in Iraq and his platoon sergeant had to explain where and how the Coast Guard guy found his weapon and ask how long ago he lost it. Not many coherent words were included in his response. I got the impression that it probably wasn’t the dumbest thing Joe had ever done and I honestly felt bad for the kid, but damn. How dumb can you be?

Original conversation was about a police officers weapon found in a public restroom and some folks were just as outraged as they are over everything.

Joe was chewed out and sarge wanted me to disappear but knew that his turn was next. One of those combinations between grateful and the certainty that the end was near.

Best part about working with the Army? Wearing a Coast Guard uniform.

How do you leave a weapon the size of an M4 in a porta-shitter? I can understand dropping a sidearm in the actual toilet, but damn!

The Canadian Army gets much more luxurious vehicles than our Army does!

That was actually part of the discussion, as I’m sure you can imagine.

...just Joe. No alcohol allowed in Iraq out of respect to our Muslim hosts. Except on the super bowl. Then 2 beers each.

Also to clarify the weapon was not in the receptacle side of the facility. Just left sitting in the corner.

One of my friends walked off with his backpack but left his MacBook sitting on a cafeteria table at college, and didn't realize he'd left it there until almost an hour later! Somehow he got the Mac back, but I busted his balls about that for days! An M4 is a lot more serious though! How much does an M4 cost, anyway?

    Wait were you an officer?

M4 costs way less than a MacBook.

    Nonalcoholic beers...

And yes, joes leave M4s all the time. Privacy happens once a year by someone within a brigade sized unit (5k ish troops). The unit then gets to play silly games until it’s found. Just glad non of my soldiers or me as a joe lost anything. Been a part of said shenanigans though. Can get super dumb. Also super funny when it’s another unit. Our support BN did it every major deployment or field problem.

Nah, I'm a Navy brat but I was never in the military; My dad was an officer in the Navy and served for 25 years. Your story reminded me of friend's idiot move, to a lesser extent.

Actual cost is irrelevant. My very first field problem in the army (1996) some kid lost his night vision (3k?), the unit spent 10 days walking the woods and digging in the post trash dump looking for them. Command was sure we wouldn’t find them since they weren’t reported missing for 3 days and supposedly in a trash bag, so assumption was they got tossed. We did that nonsense for over a week, just so the commanders could make a point.

Though in the hands of some people, a computer is more dangerous than any firearm!
