Hi all, I have 08 Taco new to me. I just bought truck. Rear bearings were dead so I replaced them. I put axles back today and there is clicking on right side now. Not sure if it was there before as I didn't drive that truck much. Oil came out clean, no metal shavings on drain plug. I hear rubbery sound and click click click as soon as I turn the wheel. Slow speeds only. With right wheel on the ground and left up diff is smooth. With left wheel on the ground and right up I hear clicks in one spot. I wanted to ask, is it possible that I put that axle in wrong? All nicely slid together no force used. Likely bad diff? Thank you for any help and all helpful posts here. Update bellow - noise only when diff is warm.

Update - when truck is cold there is no noise - all is smooth. Only when I drive for a while I hear clicking when I turn slowly. driving straight warm or cold no noise. Noise is 100% coming out of rear differential. I don't believe that I had this problem before I had axles out , but I can't tell for sure. Oil is Motomaster 75W90 synthetic , level is good.

2008 Sport has the limited slip diff. When you had the axles out and did the bearings did you replace the fluid with the Motomaster 75W90, and more importantly did you add the limited slip additive? Sounds like the clutches in diff are chattering.

Thank you Armkb. Yes I put new oil in. No LSD additive. How can I tell that I have LSD? I did research and found that if rear wheels off the ground and I spin one side, other wheel turns same direction it is LSD, if that other wheel turns other direction it is non LSD. I did test on my truck and wheels move one forward other backwards so I assumed that it isn't LSD.
I agree with you that it feels like chatter. I'll go get LSD additive today and see if it helps. It should not hurt anything. High hopes that this is my problem

After adding the additive drive in tight figure eights half dozen or so times to lube up the clutch plates. Hope it works for ya.

Stock 08 Sport models should have come from factory with the mechanical LSD. 09 forward have the fake electronic LSD as mine does.

Yep, 2008 was the last of the "clutch type" LSDs.

And I used the Redline recommended oil for our diffs, and never had to add additional lubricant for the clutch plates. It's already in that product. I'm specifically talking about their 75W90 GL-5 Gear Oil.

They recommend the MT-90 75W90 GL-4 Gear Oil for the manual transmission. It doesn't have the friction modifiers.

    Either remember:
GL-5 for the differential, and not the manual transmission, and
GL-4 for the manual transmission, and not the differential

Or go to the Redline Oil webpage.

    https://www.redlineoil.com/

I run Redline in every manual transmission and every differential.

I seriously don't know how to thank you all. Armkb you identified problem 100% spot on. Thank you very much, I owe you. Thank you EdgemanVA for recommendation, I was looking at that Redline oil here but decided to go with cheap.... I was having nightmares about $1000+ diff rebuild and fixed with $15 tube. I added tube of LSD additive and problem is no more. Rode about 50km without additive, now I see metal flakes (tiny little pieces can't feel them on my finger) so I really hope that I did't cause any damage. Time will tell. Going forward I will always buy good quality gear oil with LSD added for my rear diff. Sticker on diff was spray painted over so I didn't see warning. Here I wanted to save $20

Since I only change the fluid every 30K miles, I don't mind spending the extra $$ for Redline oil. I used something else once, and as soon as I pulled out of my driveway, I felt the LSD grabbing & releasing, and knew what they problem was. Whatever I put in was supposed to be used without any additive...it didn't work. I backed back into my driveway and caught a ride with my neighbor to the auto parts store for LSD additive. I used Redline gear oil on the next diff oil change, and haven't used anything else since.

    Good luck with your diff!

Glad you figured it out. Doubt any damage was done to clutch pack.

Just for completeness, many oils claim to have LSD additive, but still require the additional treatment. You can't always trust the label. I'm a big fan of Redline products in all critical applications. I use them in the transmission, transfer case and rear differential.

Sorry badger , I somehow missed your post. Is it wrong to add LSD additive into gear oil which claims that it has LSD additive already in? Would it make double slip, no slip or just fine slip? I am curious

No, that was my point. Many oils that claim to have the additive still require the additive. If the oil says it has LSD additive, and the diff is making noise, I put in 1/2 a bottle/tube of additive. If the chatter is still there, I add the rest. That is just how I do it. I can't see any problem adding the whole bottle/tube though. If you added more than one tube, it might cause a problem. What you did is fine.

    I'm about to change out my rear diff fluid. I have a 2015 TRD Sport 4.0 4x4. I purchased Redline 75W85 GL-5:

Do I also have to add LSD Additive?

    Thanks

If Redline says that goes into your diff, you don’t need anything else. I use the Redline recommended oil for my differential with a clutch type LSD, and it doesn’t require additional lubrication additives.

Thanks for the quick response. Ok, I’ll install without the additive, I also just went to the Redline product page for the 75W85 (Instead of Jegs where I bought it) and it says “for most LSDs, no additional friction modifiers are required”

That is incorrect. That test is to determine if a locker or a old school positraction is present but it will not work like that for a limited slip. A limited slip has to detect wheel slippage before it will engage so it will act exactly like an open differential when turning 1 wheel by hand.

My 06 Prerunner SR5 came with a LSD and everything I have read has stated that isn't possible. I'm positive the clutch for the LSD is worn out to some extent on my truck because it takes a lot to get the LSD to work.

IMO the best way to determine if a LSD is present is to hit the go pedal and burn rubber and go look at the tire marks left behind. You can use water to get it to spin easier and that'll help prevent breaking parts when it's being checked, or just check it in dirt.

The 05-08 Tacomas were the only ones with the “clutch-type” LSDs, and probably the only ones where it really matters.

With an open diff, if both wheels have "even" traction, they will both spin. You should try this with one wheel in the dirt and the other on pavement. Then post the results.
