Come up to the hills where they're more prevalent. Most of the time it's just livestock andr pets, but there are the occasional hiker attack. I'll agree that's pretty rare though.

Ground squirrels here. Assholes are everywhere in spring. I'd poison them if I could guarantee they wouldn't get out, but unfortunately they have outs everywhere.

Just giving you shit. You know what I'm about on the topic. I ain't no tree hugger and those tree hugger folks actually do more harm than good with relations to the common man non-conservationist. There definitely is a need for depredation and management in some situations. Lions are the same down here in the SC mountains. Two of my friends dogs got eaten by them in last few years. Hikers incidents are rare but have occurred down here. Ground squirrels definitely do alot of damage to our infrastructure, but they are considered architects creating burrows for a lot of endangered and common species that rely on them for underground refigia and they can't make the burrows themselves. A lot of conflicts and the human-wildlife interface is complicated.

Just enjoying my coffee and catching up on the non-sucky local news. Have to go up the hill later to drop some stuff off at the jeweler and then heading to the city for a friends house warming party...Basically like 5+ hours of driving today. Reminds us of how wonderfully far we love away from things lol.

Yeah that's why I won't chance poisoning although they are a huge issue. I don't want to accidentally kill something else. We have holes everywhere, so much so that they destroy the integrity of the hills. I just gave up planting anything other than tomatoes or onions until we move out of state because they'll just eat it.

If you need to blow it up. Pump gas down there and light it up. The rodenticides lead to cascading effects wit the animals that subsequently eat them. Eagles, coyotes, mange, etc. it builds up in their systems and weakens their immune system to a point these common mites they can usually fight off with ease they cant. Then they get mange (dont google it, sad) and loose their fur or feathers and slowly die. Secondary slow poisoning.

My friends trapped and collared Bobcats for a study. I literally got to carry one after they darted it. "My cat" hunted an orchard a lot (gps data inferred) then he got mange. Eventually they trapped him again and he was basically hairless and close to death. Went to a rehab, got meds, and recovered before release. Orchard still probably using the illegal poison though.

Parts of it are enjoyable, but driving down the hill is just a lot of freeway time. Nothing pretty about those parts.
That's exactly why I'd never poison and it's sad when people don't consider those consequences. If we lived in an area where we could control the perimeter then maybe I'd considered it, but we don't even have fences around our propetry. My original plan was to redo our garden and put up some low level electric fencing, but I'm not even bothering now. We'll be gone and whoever buys our house next hopefully doesn't have a desire to grow peppers lol.

Coyotes didn’t come here till around the late 80’s. They only came here because they expanded range from out west. They also don’t have any Predators around here. We don’t have wolfs and Only a dozen or less confirmed sightings of mountain lions in the state, Those sighting are all in the farthest north west area of the state. I know some areas that are pretty much over run with coyotes, They take down quite a bit of deer, livestock and pets. I’m not usually for just killing anything and everything. I have only killed a few and usually I was deer hunting when I got them.

parents have had groundhogs in the barn, also they got in the back side/levee and it won’t hold water anymore.

I think we call those chipmunks. Lol we don’t have much of a problem with those. I think the hawks, foxes ( grey and red) ,bobcats and snakes do a good job of taking care of them around here.

I believe chipmunks are of the same species, but totally different and actually cute. California ground squirrels are like furry destructive rats and not very attractive. Kind of like a chipmunk on meth lol

    Edit: ^^ What @Twizted said.

Yeah we don’t have those. We have a lot of these squirrels though. But they are good eating. :hungry:
