Toyota Recall Fuel Pump 2018-2019

Well, I guess if it shuts off going down the road and won't start I'll know where to tow it.

SummaryThe subject vehicles are equipped with a low-pressure fuel pump which may stop operating. If this were to occur, warning lights and messages may be displayed on the instrument panel, and the engine may run rough. This may result in a vehicle stall, and the vehicle may be unable to be restarted.

Safety RiskIf a vehicle stall occurs while driving at higher speeds, this could increase the risk of a crash.

RemedyToyota is currently investigating this issue and will be developing a remedy. When the remedy is available, it will be free of charge to vehicle owners.

 

So much bad info being spread in this thread. See the attached document. Here's some key highlights:

1. Mid March is when they will notify by mail.

2. It is not the pump under the hood, it's inside the tank. It's not a reflash ECU remedy.

3. Estimated manufacture date range of trucks affected is August 1, 2018 to January 31, 2019. Check your door sticker. Mine was built in May 2018, so I should be in the clear.

 

I would like to believe my service manager who I have known for 15 plus years and is always spot on for information. Mine was built 2/18

 

Mine clearly states with the VIN that it is part of the recall and will be fixed free when there's a remedy. What is useless?

Mine shows a build date of August 2018 so mine is most likely going to be affected

 

2019 TRD Off-road 11,800 miles. Driving at 65mph yesterday my truck lost all power. I was on a busy interstate with no shoulder, so I couldn’t even get it off the road. Miracloulusly it didn’t get smashed. Had it towed to dealer. They said they ran s bunch of tests, and cannot determine what happened. It’s running fine now. The recall link says my truck has no open recalls on it? But, I’m pretty sure this may happen again.

 

It was a 1 day job but they could not get there hands on a pump. Toyota corporate told me it’s up to each dealer what vehicles they have for loan and basically they charge toyota for them like as a rental.

 

I think that I would have pointed to the dozens of pumps in the fuel tanks of all the unsold cars and trucks on the dealer's lot.

They certainly won't want to part out a car on their lot but it would put some pressure on them and it might actually be cheaper than a month plus truck rental.

When I needed a new trunk lock mechanism for my '93 MR2 (trunk would not open), my dealer said that they don't have access to that part anymore and that they don't do internet searches for parts. So I did a search and found a genuine Toyota part. Something similar could be done with a fuel pump, perhaps.

 

I've seen it done before but it is pretty uncommon. My buddy had a new Pontiac LeMans in the late 80's and it needed repairs. IIRC that car was made in Korea and they were having some kind of national strike and could not get parts so they started using parts off the cars on the lot.

 

Yikes, glad you are OK. Having to pull over on a busy interstate with no shoulder is not good.

Also have a 2019 that is affected by this recall (dealership informed me during recent visit) and same mileage so your exact scenario concerns me.

Headed out on a ski trip in a couple of weeks on highways 50 and 395 in California. This time of year those roads I'll be traveling on with my lovely wife and dog are frequented by big rigs, often have no shoulder due to snowbanks, and some areas with limited cell phone coverage. Worried about being able to get off the roadway to a safe area so will be driving with extra caution - no passing, no remote roads, etc.

 

I don’t think this is related to the fuel pump but it could be....
Has anyone else had this...?

Two lane road. I’m doing 35 - 40MPH and I need to slow because the vehicle in front of me is stopped waiting to make a left turn. That vehicle makes his turn, and I’m now at 20 MPH. So I try to accelerate, and for a full second, nothing changes, then all of a sudden the truck lunges ahead like it gets a huge surge of gas. Has happened quite a few times. Seems like an engine issue and not a transmission fart.

 

that could be a number of things. Electronic throttle, transmission, air/fuel intake, or ECU. Def go in and have it checked

Sweet! My truck is 12/18, and the fuel tank is still out on the floor for the frame box and rear suspension build... time to upgrade. Thanks for the great info.

 

And they had A LOT of nerve calling that thing a LeMans!

 

Yeah what a departure from the original, the new fangled ones were awful!

 

Toyota service says there is nothing they can do until Toyota issues an updated pump revision. Was told today it should be out in a month or 2. Even symptomatic at times there is nothing they will do as long as the truck drives and there isn't a CEL on.
