I appreciate all the feed back. I dont know, I guess I was just wondering if 3rd gens are just weaker quality. Like, FFS, my second gen was a decade old and had literally been in the ocean up to the mirrors (not even a long story) with nothing, no problems. Just worried GM is rubbing off on Toyota I guess.

Yes. Mud destroys pulley bearings lickety split. Just had to replace my AC idler pulley because of a nice front end dunk in some muddy water.

    Fuck mud

Same here except i’d use a finger-full of silicone lube (SuperLube) on both sides of the serp belt (with the engine off) Worked like magic....

    No, they wont.
Belts get wet by spray when you drive in rain but spin at such a high speed they throw the water off quick.
I have had numerous engine wash of big rigs and the belts are not made any different, just longer.
    Moisture gets everywhere.
Everything outside the passenger compartment is designed to handle various environments.

Oh yeah? you think your pulleys do well with water in them I’ve got an idea for you. Pull them off and submerge them in water for a day. Put them back on. See what happens

Edit- just noticed you’re a 3rd gen guy.

    i apologize.

have your wife remove off those pulleys for you

Is that common with older Tacoma's, they breakdown while forging water and mud. Good to know! Thanks for the information, I guess my 3rd gen pulleys will be just fine then. :boink::D

As for my wife, she might just be able to change pulleys! And there is certainly nothing wrong with that. :D

There's a reason the best Land Cruiser site on the internets is named 'ih8mud.com':D
Water doesn't worry me as much as mud does. Mud sucks ballz unless you're wheeling a 1977 Ford 250 Hi Boy with a 351 that's on 44" super swampers and you don't care about it:cool: and that's not opinion, that is based on scientific facts /sarcasm/, might be alternative facts, but facts none the less

The list is long but distinguished
Serpentine belts are notorious for squealing when they get any kind of residue on them. Clean water generally won't cause a squeal. Coolant and other stuff that can leave behind a residue that will have the belt squealing for a while and sometimes it won't go away which necessitates a belt change. I've not seen a situation where the pulleys were also at cause other than physical damage. That said, if the pulleys have some residue on them and a new belt is installed the squeal can return.

I personally had a serpentine belt on a GM car that I spilled new coolant on. It squeaked like mad. Sprayed WD40 on it while the engine was on and the squeak went away for about 3 minutes or so. The only way to get it quiet was to replace the belt.

I had a 2008 Tacoma that I drove into the swamp to try and rescue my friend's F-150 that was stuck. This is Florida, and the numerous water holes I had to drive through were full of muddy, sandy water. The hard packed sand on the bottom meant there wasn't much chance of being stuck, but being inexperienced, I charged through all of them way too fast, trying to get inertia.

The result was blasting a lot of that water into my engine compartment. Driving back home I noticed squealing, which went away. But then soon after I noticed the pulleys sounded really noisey. Soon after that, the pulley for the engine fan sized, and caused the AC compressor to over heat and seize. That was an expensive trip to the swamp.

It's too bad that the pulleys aren't a part that you can pull off, take apart and service & lube after off-roading. now, if I have that kind of muddy water intrusion I've been spraying them off with the hose the best I can while the engine is running. I don't know how much it actually helps. maybe somebody who's more familiar with the mechanics of how the pulleys work can chime in.

    Just my experience.

FYI- This may seem sketchy, but i’ve cured some squeaky belts by touching them for a few seconds with a small wire brush while the engine is running. I usually tape the wire brush to a long stick and then do both sides of the belt. Works the same on grooved or flat pulleys too, you’ve just gotta be real careful. It deglazes them and cleans the crud out of the grooves....

Yeah, it'll mess up pulleys and stuff but they're not hard to replace.
    Just have fun with it.

Have your boyfriend help pull your head from your backside, if you are submerging them for a day then your far more stupid and should not have a vehicle.
    It's not a submarine.

Come back when you have driven several million miles in multiple vehicles and environments.

    What hole?

Get your pulleys wet. See what happens. Do you not understand that water isn’t a good bearing lubricator?
