How to clean transmission filter?

Does anyone know what the best way to clean an a340f transmission filter is? I've heard that because the filter is just a screen, it can be cleaned and put back in rather than replaced. Since you can't really see inside the filter, I'm not sure how to go about cleaning it. Do you just run water through it or let in soak in something? If you just run water through it, is there a specific direction to do so?

 

I may be wrong, but I always thought these were supposed to be replaced...?

 

You don’t clean it, you replace it.

Do NOT put anything through it then reinstall it.

Weird, I've seen a few people say you could just clean them. I'll probably just replace it since they're pretty inexpensive.

 

Most people replace it, no reason not to unless you can't at that moment.

 

Screens of yore in other marquees were visible. In a healthy transmission there really isn't much, if anything to clean.

When I did have a hankering to clean them, and the pan after drilling to mount a drain plug for future services, I used either a regular parts washer (with whatever degreaser was in it), brake cleaner, Carb cleaner (liquid, not spray) or even mineral spirits.

On mine now, I drain and fill at 30k intervals, and have no intention of ever pulling the pan or servicing / replacing the filter.

If I had a unit that was over 90k and had never been serviced, I'd replace the filter, button stuff up and do a couple more drain and fills at 1k intervals. Then jump to 30k intervals.

The transmission I'm working with is at 150k so I'll probably just go ahead and replace the filter. I just bought it and the service history is unknown, so it seems like a good thing to do. I'm curious what @gearcruncher has to say as well.

In most cases when the bottom of the pan was clean as well as the magnets , you could get away with standing the filter on end and flushing it with brake clean and spraying fluid down through the outlet . You could shine a flashlight up into the suction end for a visible reference as you are spraying it to verify nothing brass , aluminum , clutch material or plastic comes out . The steel is collected by the magnets
Like others have mentioned , usually a transmission service is planned . You are already purchasing the pan gasket and fresh oil . Might as well grab a filter too .

 

They're inexpensive, might as well put a new one in there.

 

I’m doing this procedure this weekend with replacing the filter with Genuine Toyota Part.

what do you recommend cleaning the transmission pan inside and out. Any degreaser (i.e. Purple Power) or a Brake Cleaner?
