Usually set the cruise on 72 on this one highway, don't like any faster as the MPG definitely starts to sink.

    I prefer MTs.
I'm interested in a Tacoma when we get to the USA - An MT Tacoma. Only an MT Tacoma.
    No MT - No Tacoma.

Had three previous Tacoma‘s. All of them manual transmissions. Wanted a TRD double cab with a long bed. Needed something in the back that could I could get more than a potted plant in it. DCLB wasn’t available with a manual transmission. So in almost 35 years first automatic transmission. Can’t say that I’m hating it ...

Copy that!! Speed limit on my commute is 75 and if you don't go 80 you get passed by everyone. No wonder my mpg is so bad :)

At least with the MT, it’s in the power band and can maintain 80 with ease. When I did it in my AT, it shifted like crazy and couldn’t maintain speed at all.

I drove my buddies 2019 OR AT and it drove beautiful, i laugh when people complain about the transmission. I know 2016-2018 required updates, but 19 and up is fine.

With that said i would never buy AT taco, love my MT taco. Had to sacrifice bed space and locker, no regrets at all.

It seems to drive better after the update and i just installed the boot retainer from trailbreaker, i love this truck even more now.

I gave up long time ago worrying about those who are passing me when I,m doing the limit of a tad over because Here in Utah ha ha haaa it don't matter how fast you are going someone is gonna want to go faster and past anyways I get great Mpg at 70 to 75 so I tend to stay in that range and let the others get the tickets and do the crying...

    True there.

The times that I was driving through Utah, I was surprised what was passing us. Full size passenger vans loaded and booking down the road.

I have had Tractors pulling doubles past me at 70 mph on SR 201 that is when I went and got a Gps speedometer app to see if my Trucks speedometer read out was right or not and it was not .. I was actually doing faster than what the Speedometer shows by 4 Mph.

Absolutely. And that combo did pass Though my mind and seriously considered it. In the end it came down to my kids - believe it or not - never learned to drive a stick. So I figured if God forbid something should happen to me, at least they could drive it.

Funny thing is, I often think of about the manual tranny if I made a mistake going with the AT ... but it doesn’t cross my mind when I’m actually in the truck (it’s also only a month and a half old).

Hi, first post here. I’m in the market for a new pickup and was very pleased to find the Tacoma comes in a MT. I previously test drove a 2020 Tacoma 4 cylinder with the automatic that my dad was looking at leasing for cheap, it was gutless but I liked the feel of the truck. I’ve been looking full size, but I don’t want/need a full size truck. I currently have a 1987 Bronco built for crawling with a T-18 manual trans and my 2015 Passat TDI commuter is a manual transmission.

I found that my local dealer in Flagstaff had a 2020 TRD Off-road MT in stock, so we went for a test drive today. The sales guy asked me “why do you want a manual?”, to which I replied “because I’m a f—-ing man”. More important than the transmission is how I fit in a vehicle, I’m 6’5” and built like a lineman at 330#. The power seat was comfortable for me, and I had a surprising amount of space for my left elbow and right knee. The two things I wasn’t thrilled with was the position of the steering wheel, had it all the way back and up and my knees had to be spread to clear under the wheel, and my size 16 shoe was hitting the metal bracket for the brake pedal when I put it high on the clutch pedal. I would want to modify the position of the steering wheel if possible, or swap in a smaller diameter wheel, maybe off a different model Toyota.

Start the test drive. The truck was in the back and fresh off the transport with 7 miles. It wasn’t PDI’ed yet, so it had plastic covering everything and some of the safety electronics were throwing warning lights. I was expecting the truck to drive like a truck and it didn’t disappoint, the ride was good and slightly firm. I liked how easy of a manual it is to drive and the clutch feel, but I kept catching my toe on the brake pedal bracket. I took the truck on a 10 mile loop that has about 4 miles of 75 mph freeway. I found the truck to be sluggish getting on the highway, I revved the engine to about 3000 RPM on the shifts through 2nd and 3rd gears and held 4th to 75 mph at full throttle. It seemed to take a long time to get up to speed. I expected it to have significantly more power with the 4.30 gears and the manual trans, but it felt way underpowered. I’m wondering if the truck needs to be broken in to free up some power, if perhaps the electronic nannies being offline was pulling power somehow, or the 7000 ft elevation was taking a toll on the Tacoma. Acceleration wise the truck was a disappointment, it reminded me of my old 1988 Isuzu 4 cylinder 4x4 truck I had in college, just not much under the hood. Keep in mind that I’m used to driving a diesel economy car that is not fast (but has torque), but you certainly could’ve told me this Tacoma had a 4 cylinder and I would’ve believed you. I’m not trying to badmouth the Tacoma at all, I’m just surprised that this truck seemed this slow. I drive about 20K miles per year with about half of that on I-17 between Flagstaff and Phoenix (long mountain grades), so I do want something that can pull the hills in at least 5th gear at 80 mph.

Does anyone else have similar feelings or is my experience way off the norm? I know this may look like a troll account with this first post, but I promise I’m not trolling. I’m genuinely shopping the Tacoma, specifically with TRD Off-road with the selectable locker.

These trucks make all their power higher in the Rev Band, once you get above 3500 it will start to open up and get going.

I wasn’t looking at the tach specifically, but 75 mph in 4th seemed to be around 4500 RPM?

My truck feels great on the highway, engine feels very responsive at higher RPM's. When I first got my truck it felt kinda slow but over time you learn to adjust your driving style to it and then it feels much better.
