I’m surprised they let you back into Japan after what happened last time you were there.

Here's something my dad passed on to me -

    15812303340945236091473654135900.jpg

He had used it on his deployments only for me to end up using it on my own. Old reliable but accurate AF

And if you were out in the middle of nowhere, people wouldn't even know wtf to do with those coordinates.

I know maps are outdated and all, but with a lensatic compass and topo map you can navigate anywhere.

Lost? Just aim towards something as a point of reference, shoot an azimuth, convert using the supplied G/M angles and pinpoint your own location on said map.

    I loved land nav

We did navigation in college, but more as a way to accurately map geologic outcrops, cross sections, that sort of thing.

    You know, nerd stuff.

    You would've enjoyed doing some of the stuff I learned and did when cross training;

FDC, fire direction center, established an areas GM angle using an aiming point (the same tool that sits on a tripod that you see the city workers use).

Not only that, you lay in your gun line pointed in one general direction; towards where you expect the enemy to be.

You have another factor at play here; your FO, or forward observer. He sat at a distance from you, with eyes on target. This could be a good 3000 yards away from you, but he would call over to FDC an estimated range from him to the target, as well as an azimuth from him to the target.

Having your FOs position, you'd use his coordinates to plot the target being called out. Use that in relation to your own position, you can adjust your gun line to realign and point towards the enemy.

One gun (from the 4) shoots a round in adjust. FDC calls it over to FO Shot Out. FDC will also have to know time of flight so FDC will call Splash 10 seconds prior to impact. FO observes and either calls an adjustment and then fire for effect, or fire for effect if there were effects on target.

Our SOP was 8 rounds per gun for a fire for effect; each round has a blast radius of 40 meters....you do the math on that parallel sheath.

Let's not forget that you have different fuse settings on those mortars for different target types. Let's also not forget if you incorporate air, because those mortars take air space and you have a small window for time of flight and air on target. Did I mention hang time for illume rounds? Not to mention same distance targets but at offset elevations?

I was the fucking shit at FO and FDC

Oh and I didn't mention; all that stuff above? That's done without the gun line or FDC ever seeing the target.

    Indirect fire :oldglory:
