Frame rust question

I'm a new TACOMA owner does anyone know if the frame rust issue has been resolved on the 2nd gen trucks or is it still to soon to tell? I did have the rust protection sprayed under it so hopefully that helps.

 

No. The frame does not have sufficient paint to withstand the test of time. So your frame will rust. The frame will last longer in an arid climate. I have seen some dreadful pictures of 2nd gen frames on this site, mostly from states where they salt the roads or have high humidity.

Im spraying my frame within the next few weeks with Amsoil HD Metal Protector.

 

when I lifted mine I cleaned the frame and spot painted it with POR 15 and overcoated everything with tremclad gloss black. I also plan to have it undercoated with Krown every year. Hopefully that will be enough.

 

I bought http://www.eastwood.com/rust-solutions/treatment/ew-heavy-duty-anti-rust-aerosol-black-13-5-oz.html this to coat my frame with. I've used Boeshield before, but that is really expensive stuff and it lasts only about a year. Since this is an oily wax, I'm hopeful that it will prevent any more rust from forming and repel the crap I drive through every winter.

 

I didn't think they used salt in the Prairies? Most of the vehicles I've seen from Manitoba to Alberta in my years of working there were basically brand new underneath even after 5 years.

Roads heavily laden with salt combined with salty air here in the east really takes it's toll on anything metal.

 

Tw member Nad is from Manitoba and his 2nd gen frame is a horror show , but I agree , Ontario east is not any better , maybe worse .

 

I loved working on cars from the prairies or 'berta. Check out the stuff from NS...or fortech's NL!

 

If you have new truck and you live in rust belt just paint your frame with good primer and good paint. Paint inside and out with it.

I think the point is , if you have to pay $30 000 + for a vehicle and Toyota sells it in the rust belt , maybe they should do a better job of painting the frames for you .

 

You would think so.
Believe me if Toyota asked me if I want to spend extra $300 for extra coat of paint I would jump on it. They must think we all live in Cali and drive trucks to shopping malls.
Factory paint on the frame is complete crap. My front differential had no paint whatsoever. I mean who the hell heard about company sellign truck with parts bare metal.

 

Unless you dismantle your truck, then media blast your frame and properly prime and paint, it is very, very hard to do a complete "once only" job on the Tacoma.

I noticed most of the rust spots on my Tacoma blistered and rusted from the inside out - leading one to believe that whoever manufacturers and finishes the frames for Toyota is not doing a complete prep job on the frames and applying the finish over rust. Even slightly rusted metal will continue underneath a layer of primer and paint.

My inlaws own a local independent garage that applies various rust proofing treatments for local dealerships on new vehicles, as well as an annual treatment to those willing to protect their vehicle. I give them a hand from time to time in the evenings as the autumn is really their busiest time of the year. I've applied hundreds of treatments over the past couple of years and no other truck frame out there rusts as fast as a Tacoma - period. Many of the treatments are applied annually so you get the same trucks year after year, and some of them you remember and can gauge their "rustiness" on an annual basis.

Even the brand new Tacoma's that come in the shop for the "lifetime" treatment are ridiculously rusty right off the car carrier.

Tacoma frames hands down rust the quickest. After 5-7 years all trucks around here look like a salt water anchor, but the Tacoma's get their much quicker.

 

I prefer a wire brush on a mini grinder followed up by a sand blaster. Professional marine grade primer applied with a professional paint gun followed up by semi gloss black chassis paint. And I do this each and every spring.

Don't know if I'd call a vehicle an investment though. Most investments turn dividends and result in a net value greater than the initial amount invested.

 

I dont think its so much prep-work as simply there is not enough paint.
Paint job is very thin and paint looks porous. I am sure thats how water and air gets to metal.
Also I dont use spray gun for very reason. Sprays tend to lock air with the paint, where brush will create thick layer sealing anything underneath. No air no water means no rust. Does not matter how material looks underneath.
Its not pretty afterwords but it will last.

Paint over something either slightly, moderately, or heavily rusted, then report back in 12 months time and tell us its not about prep work.

I've used rust paint and a brush in the past as well without any luck if the surface wasn't properly prepped.

 

i have my 07 DC undercoated at recommended intervals since new....no rust on the frame yet!! I'm in Nova Scotia and a 5 minute drive to salt water, no one in canada uses as much raod salt as our Province as well as that liquid shit.

 

Just sprayed a gallon of Fluidfilm all over the bottom of my truck, heading into its first winter, we will see.
