Just noticed some surface rust already beginning on my sliders that were installed 1/2019 . My guy here had them sand blasted before he powder coated them in a wrinkle black . I have been pretty diligent in keeping them washed off in the winter . What gives ? I thought powder coat was better than regular paint ? It would be ok if they were bolt on I could easily take them off . But they are welded on

That totally bag sucks, Bill. So what do you do? Clear coat powder coat? How come the finish lasts on BBQ’s so long even with hot/cold cycles. Makes no sense.

 

Good question ? I will be showing it to the guy that did it . $100 to sand blast $200 to powder coat $212 to weld to frame and epoxy paint coat areas of frame sliders are welded to .

Sucks bro. The best thing to do at this point is use the Rustoleum Wrinkle Paint over it. They make a brush on version in a can. I use it on my crawlers, as it is better than powder coat (which is heat plastic dust by the way). Yes powder is durable but really depends on several factors regarding application. It’s not all done the same way. Are yours black? You could get this and do a coat on a piece of scrap tube to see if works for you. Now it is textured, and strong as shit. May be more texture then you want. Worked well on my truggy.

Yes , black . Wrinkle coat .cant believe there is rust on them already . How do you think I should clean that rust off ? Maybe a dremel tool with a small wire brush then wipe it down with alcohol maybe ?

 

Need to see a pic to comment on the approach. I would use my angle grinder ever so lightly take off the rust myself.
But really yeah some sort of sanding needs to happen, then apply Rust killer, Primer, Top Coat x2 or x3

 

Send me a pic of those sliders, wipe it down a little so I can see the finish on them.

 

I will get some pics tomorrow. Getting dark now . It’s very slight surface rust that just appeared within the last few days so a angle grinder might be overkill . That Rustoleum coating in the can sounds like the way to go

It most certainly is strong as hell. I would definitely do a good size test area on something first, to make sure your down with that much texture. It’s really amazing stuff you can just brush on more if you scrap it, and you can’t even tell.
