Inline Power Steering Pump

So I'm going to install an inline power steering filter but I can't find hydraulic hose at any of my local stores. Being that it's installed on the return line which is not high pressured, can I run fuel hose on it. I've read somewhere not to but it didn't make sense to me being that return line is not high pressure. Any insight would be awesome. Thanks in advance.

 

Your original hose is to short to mount the filter ??

Some fuel line hoses do not play well with hydraulic fluid.Power Steering Fluid

As long as it is Buna-N rubber interior you should be good

to be honest. I'm not sure on the ps but the same exact filter fits on the transmission as well and Ive seen one of the filters cut open after 30k miles and man. That filter caught a lot of debris and tiny metal particles. So I figured it couldn't hurt.

 

Yes, because I have to redirect the hose a tad so that the hose isn't kinked. I just bought some return line anyways.

 

I wouldn't, its a safety item so if it randomly catches a restriction you're in strongarm steering mode.

The pumps aren't known for failure, the rack is more likely to wear out and leak way before a fluid quality issue arises.

The main (only?) similarity in an automatic trans and a PS system is they both use ATF.

You have more risk than benefit modifying the PS.

 

On the 2nd gens at least, the ability to remove the crap from the PS reservoir would be a plus. Mine has never clogged that fluid wasn't flowing but the internal filter has caught a lot of stuff and cleaning it out is a pain because it doesn't fit through the screen and the shape of the top doesn't allow you to just pour it out. I'm replacing my pump and will be adding a filter. 3/8" ID line is what you need for a 2nd gen, put the filter on the return (low pressure) side and you'll be good.

 

Seems like a lot of work for no real gain.

 

I have done this on 3 1st gens. 2 of them the “strainer” in the ps reservoir was torn/gone. There is value in doing it, and it’s really easy. Get a couple feet of fuel hose and some extra clamps, and an ATF magnetic filter (want to say MagneTek?). Drain system, remove return line from PS Reservoir. Attach to filter. Add about 16” of new hose to other end of filter, and attach to PS reservoir. I zip ties the filter near the radiator support. Ps fluid stays much cleaner now.
