Brake Upgrade: StopTech Rotors + TRD Performance Pads

Yeah, the Street rename was a little confusing but I was aware of it. I have the 308 Streets on now with the 309 Sports waiting to go on.

 

Finally getting around to swapping pads for the StopTech Sports, and the correct length non-extended brake lines, and the new lines rub the bump stop mounts. Little hard to see with the plastic to protect against the brake fluid.

Anyone else have this issue with the StopTech BBK kit? Running the 340mm ST60 kit on about 2.25” front lift.

 

Zip tie it somewhere? Kinda funny the correct brake lines have issues

 

I was trying to avoid the zip tie solution. Chafing on the lines isn’t your friend.

I use some 17” pliers and bent the lower brake line mount so that rather than pointing directly at the caliper it angles the line closer to parallel to the caliper (keeping the line body away from the caliper) and directing the line more forward toward the chassis, keeping it away from the bump stop. Looks to clear adequately in all places now.

 

And this is why zip ties are not your friend.

I had placed a zip tie as a very temporary measure to keep my excessively long brake line clear of danger. Ended up staying on way longer than planned, but after just 2 months you can see the line is discolored where it rubbed on the zip tie.

 

Just as important in a brake job as good rotors and pads are proper cleaning and lubrication. Those are very good lubricants. I used Silaramic to fix squeal on my wife's car a while back, originally used the cheapest "high" temp silicone grease I could get locally, barely lasted 3 months before it squealed. Cleaned everything well, gave every contact surface and pins a good amount and squeal was gone. I used it while doing my brakes on my truck a year ago and haven't heard a thing. Permatex also makes

Permatex 80653 Silicone Extreme Brake Parts Lubricant, 8 fl. oz.

Silicone Ceramic Extreme Brake Parts Lubricant 80653 which is probably as good, if not better than the regular Ceramic Extreme. I've heard of people swear by Napa Sil-Glyde for slide pins since its silicone-based instead of PAO based so it is compatible with rubber boots (won't swell boots). The same people swear by Silaramic or an equivalent on just stationary metal to metal parts since it contains a little solid lubricant (zinc oxide), so it may not be best for slide pins but probably great for extremely hot metal parts.

 

The piston measurements of the ST60 calipers were imprinted on the pistons; 36mm, 34mm, 34mm.

The StopTech Sport pads are light years better than the StopTech Street pads, even before proper bed in.

 

Skimming through this thread, this is some good info! Does the T4R OR not have the electro-hydraulic A-TRAC system, and thus be a candidate for swapping the higher-flow MC if doing a T4R rear disc brake swap?

A little confused by your question. The T4R OR/Pro has A-TRAC and the rear disc setup. If you are referring to doing a T4R A-TRAC MC swap on a Tacoma, based on the part pricing I've seen that would run about $2k with OEM parts, making it not so appealing. But I couldn't find a lot of info on people that have done it. However at that rate the prices definitely do not justify rear discs unless you are in a competition sport.

 

You can do the tundra upgrade though.

but now i have a tundra too and want bigger brakes for it.

technically these would work if the adapter was machined about 3mm to account for the shallower rotor.

honestly i really want aluminum calipers. these heavy SOBs can be a pain to work with and keep seizing up

 

Use 2 zip ties

 

Toyota has the TRD Ceramic pads on sale for $68.40 plus shipping right now. Got them on the way for $81.66 total.

Hey guys was wondering your thoughts on the TRD pads and stoptech rotors for extensive off paved road performance? If the road is muddy for weeks will they still perform? Thanks getting ready to leave this June for a multiyear trip thru 100 countries.

 

I know the Wheelers brake lines are recommended but what about these from stop tech?

950.44520 on my 13 dclb 20k miles ago. Holding up ok, and slight but noticeable improvement in pedal feel. They don't look like the picture. Pedal feel with the 14wa is still softer than original.

 

Anyone that wants their Tacoma to have much better brakes needs to install a 2007-2019 Tundra or Sequoia brake master cylinder AND booster. There is no comparison. Absolutely fantastic brakes... even with 6500+ pounds in tow.

 

StopTech is solid too. Running the StopTech BBK, you cannot use the OEM lines and have to use the StopTech stainless lines.

Unless you have an Off Road or Pro, the basic swap isn't compatible with the ATRAC vehicles.
