So you got it to work by attaching the ABC-28 Override Harness with red and orange wires to the gray connector on the far right as shown in the picture?

 

A picture of the back of the head unit with those two ABC harnesses attached would be great.

 

I'm scratching my head because I'm pretty sure my black connector is on the right. But I screwed up the connectors once, so maybe I failed successfully again. I'm not going to take it apart because I don't want to jinx it.

 

Yeah, you'd think a picture or two would be something that you would get with a nearly $200 kit, but I guess they couldn't be bothered with that. Here is what mine looks like .

Yeah I ended up emailing the "company" about it, asking for a refund, or a replacement part, and they finally responded this morning . Of course when it came time to tighten down the camera, I found out that notched nut doesn't actually tighten, but just spins freely. I tried Teflon tape but that does not work. And since it's not actually biting on the threads, I doubt loctite would be the answer. I emailed them back about that, waiting to see if they respond. Camera doesn't do me much good if it's hanging off the front grill by The wire.

 

Damn it!!! I have plugged the ABC-28 harness into the black connector all this time. no wonder! I’ll take mine out again and rewire today. Yeah, the back of the head unit of ‘20 is completely different, they should have made another video for it. I wouldnt be surprised if someone has damaged/loosen a wire here and there on the back radio and scratched the front side. F### lol

 

Yes that's exactly what I did too when it wasn't working for me. it was The logical choice looking at the existing pictures that they have on their website, with a finger pointing to the left-most (as you're looking at it from the top, as we all are) connector on the back of the head unit saying that was where you should put the ABC-28. Of course that's for the 2019 and prior models, but you would think, that if the 2020 was different, and that the harness was supposed to be connected on THE COMPLETE OPPOSITE SIDE, that they MIGHT have mentioned that somewhere and the directions. Or maybe I'm just crazy.

Anyway when you get a chance let us know if it worked.

Wohoo I got it to work!!!Thank you Neipa27 for pointing it out that the ABC-28 override harness should connect to GRAY connector to supply power to the cameras. You are awesome man! In step 10 of Deusexmachina, it should be elaborated as followed in the pics. The rest is just wiring all wires by color nice and tight and zip tie into a bundle to tuck them away behind the steering wheel. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=gDH_rI72GEs Watch this guy’s video from 8:30-10:30 min mark to see how you can temporarily remove that piece underneath (all are clips on w/ 1 main 10mm bolt and 2 10mm screw bolts). Use a nylon pry bar at the top corners to pry it open. With the right camera mount and set up, yours should look like OEM.

 

I tried crushing the nut to get it to bite and snapped it in half. So I took an M8 nut and cut my own slot with a hacksaw. Now that I'm writing this, I don't think it was stainless, so I better think about replacing that sometime soon.

I still feel confused and slightly bad, I hope I haven't been leading you guys wrong this whole time. I'm glad you've got it figured out!

 

Hey, nothing to feel bad about dude, you were just doing your best to help. You have put more effort in the helping in the last day and a half then anytimebackupcamera.com has put in for the last couple months that their product has been out.

I did finally get a response from them about the notched nut. Their response was try crushing it, and if that doesn't work, "these things happen." No shit actual quote. Stainless will definitely be the way to go, but at least it's better what came with the kit. It's either aluminum or zinc. I'm basing that on the fact that it's not magnetic. (high quality stainless steel would also not be magnetic, but it's definitely not that.) I'm going to try crushing it to fit tomorrow, and then when it breaks I'm going to drive to home Depot in a fit of rage and buy an M8 nut and then do what you did with the hacksaw . While I'm there, I'm going to buy a much better washer.

 

That's at least 3 of us with the bad nut, so it's probably everyone.

 

Woa.. what's that weird looking shiny rectangle thing in my dashboard where the gaping wire-hole is supposed to be? Oh yeah that's right, that's my head unit! I had almost forgotten what it looked like when it was installed!

This is my first post here,
Just went through the hole 40something pages scrolling and looking for a solution to my problem, hope anyone here can shed some light to my ignorance jajaja
A guy just installed my full kit with front and switch
And it presented a couple of issues,
First the camera is mirrored, I just need to take it back and snip some wires and straighten that out
Second, the camera stays on the always, even with the truck off, we plug the red camera wire to the 4th fuse slot
Third I dont like the picture, it show just a couple of feets in front of it

Is there a better camera for my kit???

 

Okay, there's a couple things going on here. The first is, I don't recommend that you plug the camera into a fuse like people on youtube are doing. That means the camera is always going to be powered up every time you start the truck up, (or in your case all the time, because you plugged into a fuse that has power when the truck is off) There's no reason to power the camera all time if you aren't using it, you're just going to burn it out a lot faster. To wire this up correctly, follow the directions that DuesExMachina has outlined earlier in this thread. That way the camera is only getting turned on when you hit the switch.

Secondly, you have the same problem that I did with the narrow field of view. This is caused by Anytimebackupcamera.com sending you a really, PIECE OF SHIT camera with your kit. I was actually logging in here to bitch about it, when I saw your post, so I'm writing this instead. The camera you got sucks for this application. The guy who runs ABC doesn't seem to give a shit. The camera they sent me did the same exact thing, it was shit. It had the same view as the pictures you posted; extremely narrow, with about an 8 foot max range. I solved this problem, by getting really, really angry, and buying a much better camera off of Amazon. Here is the link to the one I got. It is much better quality, even the cables are more robust, the nut it comes with actually has 360 degrees of metal on it, and tightens, AND it's actual stainless steel. The field of view is nearly 180 degrees, like your backup camera. It's perfect. It does not have the light on it, but I have headlights attached to to the front of my truck, so that doesn't seem to matter.

I'm pretty pissed (if everyone can't already tell) that I had to go and buy a second camera for this after spending $189 on the wires, but in the words of Brian, from ABC when I emailed him about the problem: "These things happen."

The mirror image thing is an easy fix. After you throw that bullshit camera in the garbage, and get a new one, it will come with very clear directions on which wire to snip to reverse the image, and which one to snip that takes away the guide lines if you want. Hope this helps.

You're welcome. I originally thought that the horrible angle of view was due to me mounting it at the wrong angle somehow, or my grill being at an angle or something. I tried a few things before realizing that it was the camera.

If you haven't tested yours yet, hopefully you got one of the decent ones. It seems ABC just puts what ever the cheapest camera they can get at the moment in the "kits" so people have been getting different ones from from them .

 

Geeze. I bought another camera but figured I'd use the one that came with the kit...I might swap now.

 

Deus, does the camera that came with your kit have the narrow field of view like mine and Artur's does? If so, it's totally worth the swap. At least with camera that I got. The connector is even the same, just more durable. Takes 5 minutes.

In the last picture I posted on this thread, even though the screen is washed out, you can sorta see how narrow and downward-pointing the field of view on that camera was. I was so excited that I had gotten harnesses working, I hadn't noticed it yet when I posted that.
