    I mean, I wouldn't worry about the misalignments. You were so overdue for the spherical bearings that they were the real issue. Just replace them.

    So, what's the sound do you think? Not the AC Idler?

    Time to take the belts off one by one. Who knows maybe it's a timing idler or water pump bearing.

    That's what happens to those spacers. It's gonna keep happening, plan to do em once a year or more.

    Exactly my thought. Just wasn't sure if that was a "well known noise" that I didn't know :).

    Here are the parts for you:
    90080-10124 1995-2004, 6 cyl 4WD, PreRunner Suspension Lower Front Coilover Flange Bolt
    90170-14026 1995-2004, 6 cyl 4WD, PreRunner Suspension Lower Front Coilover Nut (I didn't replace these, but just in case you want the #)

    That is quite the restraint, kudos (or perhaps, sorry to see you're getting old). Come to think of it, you probably only did that b/c Zane wasn't there to fix your alternator :p.

    The newer trucks have their own issues too. Unless you plan on swapping trucks every few years, you'll more than likely end up in the same boat.

    Just remember - you went on a what, 2500 mile trip there? There's a reason that when you drive a vehicle for business/govt. use, you get to write of ~$0.52 cents/mile - that's because you should assume that is the wear and tear on the vehicle over that mile. Not to mention depreciation of the vehicle value.

    My guess is that even though you don't love fixing the green truck, (a) it's cheaper to fix than the 3rd gen (or an Excursion) and (b) the depreciation is definitely less.

    That's of course just putting the financial aspect into perspective - you shouldn't change rigs to think that things will be cheaper, because they won't. Of course, I know you've got comfort and "build fun" to consider as well, so it may not be just about financial for you.

    This I understand too well. It may work really well for what it is right now, doesn't mean you couldn't tear it down to its bones and go after a more creative/capable build. That's kinda what the plan was with my grey truck before I decided it wasn't worth it on that shell. It's what the plan is now, trying to keep it interesting. Certainly isn't gonna save me any money, but I've come to terms with having a spendy hobby.

    You said it yourself, the 3rd gen is good for most of what you do.

    Put some decent tires and suspension on it, swap the tent over, go adventuring.

    Then do whatever the hell you want with the 1st gen.


    Kinda where I see myself heading in a few years. Do a very simple build on a 2nd gen (and know where to stop this time), put the GFC on it, and use it for 'overlanding'. Then I can go crazy with my current rig.
