Nope. The idea is to make loosing anything considered a sensitive item (weapon, night vision etc) so painful that everyone is scared shitless to loose them. Hell if don’t correctly, that shit is visually inventories before and after every movement, not to mention in the morning, at night and periodically throughout the day. Shouldn’t be an excuse to loose them.

    Intentional...

Probably twenty years ago, I heard about hackers getting into the software for a dam and opening it, causing a huge flood!

How did he lose night vision goggles?

This brings me back to another school story; When I was in 5th grade, a girl in my class threw out her prescription glasses with her lunch by mistake! Mom and dad were not happy!

No clue... rumor was it was the 5 ton used to collect the unit trash and his NVGs were kept in the back in a trash bag with chem lights. The thought is they threw them out with the chow trash some evening. Of course had they been kept in the cab, inventoried by his NCOs like they were supposed to had been, wouldn't have been an issue.

20 years ago that would have been impossible in the US. The Honeywell SCADA systems were closed networks that you’d have to physically be connected to in order to do anything. It’s when these systems are connected poorly to the Internet that bad things can happen. The other issue with a dam is that the release is controlled through the spillways and overflow pipes, preventing any real damage from getting downstream.

The only real way to cause damage with a dam is to blow it up.

Now, a SCADA system that is really dangerous is a petrochemical plant. Open two opposing valves against each other and you can create a very destructive chemical reaction. Or change the direction of high voltage transmission lines so that they create a surge that blows the distribution network of something the size of Montana. Or make a country’s nuclear centrifuges spin out of control and destroy their uranium enrichment capability.

Cyber Warfare ain’t just posting mean shit on Facebook.

I left my ID on a DFAC tray and lost it while deployed. Mildly got in some shit for that.

Later found it under my mattress in my CHU and kept that quiet.

My point is...it's easy to lose a thing. It's harder to lose a larger thing, but its importance has nothing to do with it.

It's worse when they lose they keys.

Wait - humvees have keys now? In my day, you just turned on the accessory and starter and you were off to the races (if they didn’t chain the steering wheel up).

In Saudi and Bahrain, I was a notorious forklift thief. You can either be the guy in the fork, or you can be a schlub breaking down pallets.

They do not. They do however have padlocks for the wheel and doors.

No, my MOS was 27E - T.O.W. / Dragon misslie systems repair, but yes, at that time, McClellan was home base for the Chemical Corps as well as Military Police.

Most likely HAHO. How do I know? They are wearing oxygen masks. You only need to wear oxygen when jumping over 13,000 feet. Jumping O2 sucks. HAHO stands for High Altitude High Opening, and the human body needs O2 to survive.

And HALO is high altitude low oxygen right?

i believe masks are worn for HALO as well, since they are still jumping from high altitude.

Not typically. During most HALO missions, you exit at less than 13,000 feet. Rarely are military free fall jumps scheduled for above that altitude because of the ass pain in getting the airspace, pre-breathing, and having to configure the aircraft for O2 consoles etc.

Per my brother, a retired flight engineer on C-130s and C-5s -

"If I have to put on my oxygen mask it's because something's broke and not because some stupid pax decided to be all they can be."

LOL, thank your brother for his service. On all USAF aircraft (and large passenger airplanes), the air that pax breath is pressurized inside to a little less than one atmosphere. That's typically 11/12 PSI. When the ramp is opened/cracked (so that those that need to be all they can be), that pressurization is gone. What happens when humans are deprived of O2 at altitudes higher than about 10,000 feet? Watch the below video for a good example.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XcvkjfG4A_M

Your brother undoubtedly worked many HALO/HAHO jumps in his career. As a flight engineer, he was required to attend the USAF High Altitude Chamber Course (as was I) in order to learn the effects of hypoxia on the human brain. It's great training.

Holy shit! That was a great vid! We are trained on conditions involving low O2 when working in confined spaces. This really hits home.

    Thanks
