According to a lot of people here, the 1st and 2nd gens are a bit more desirable and besides yours hasn't even been broken in yet. That and bashing on a new truck is not as fun as one that is paid off lol.

Might as well just buy the stuff you always wanted for your truck with the money you'll save including power seats if you want them =)

    Are you me?!?

Bought my 09 brand new off the lot. 166k on the clock. Best vehicle I've ever owned.

It just does EVERYTHING. I'm not going to bash 3rd gens, but I'm driving this one till the wheels fall off.

My recommendation is to open a new bank account, and deposit the amount of a new truck payment into that each month, and continue to drive your current truck. When it comes time to actually buy a new truck, you can avoid all financing (and finance charges) and just cut them a check. Have a feeling if you suggest paying them the entire amount, they may knock off a few thousand.

My 2008 has 90K miles, and drives as well as the day I drove it off the lot. I plan to keep it at least another 12 years. Heck, I feel confident that I would still be driving my 94 Toyota truck if it hadn't been killed by a semi in 2008.

I do agree with your first sentence. As far as payment, most auto manufacturers make more off of their financing than they do off the vehicle sale itself. They'd much rather you finance it thru them than pay for it immediately. In my experience they don't give extra $ off if you immediately write a check; I have multiple times and it never has affected the price negotiation.

The bottom line is that vehicles are depreciating assets- keep them for as long as makes financial sense and resist the urge to buy new unless absolutely necessary. Vehicles today are more reliable than ever and most easily last 150k+ miles with routine maintenance. I put 313k miles on a car and it was still running when I sold it. In comparison the couple across the street from me either leases or trades in a vehicle every year or two, meaning they've had a car payment continuously for 20 years. I wish I kept a timeline of the vehicles they've owned! As a society, we've gotten into this justification of "I deserve this...." instead of "I absolutely need this..." which is why many Americans are broke and people are now financing vehicles for 6-7 years. More than half of new BMWs and Mercedes are leased- most people are driving more than they can afford to own.

I was just going off my experience at my local Toyota dealership when I purchased my 08. We had practically agreed on a price which was a few grand under MSRP sticker, and I mentioned I would be paying the entire amount in cash. The salesman said if I brought him a check by COB the following day, he would drop the price another $2K (which he did).

I hated driving my 2017 Tacoma (Auto). Always felt like it bogged around town and always upshifted during unnecessary moments. Loved everything else about it though. The ride was nice and everything was just...new.
Sold it and bought a 2nd Gen again and never looked back. I appreciate the low end grunt.

That said, you're probably going to get biased opinions being here in the 2nd Gen side.

I have a 2012 with 138K miles. My wife gets nervous with any vehicle over 80K miles. She's been trying to talk me into trading my truck in for a brand new F150 (she has always owned Fords and financed through them). I told her I'm good for now.

Just explain to her that Toyota miles are like the opposite of Ford miles (like reverse dog years). 100k on a Ford is like 300k on a Toyota so when you hit 240k you can sell it then =)

Keep your truck, being content with what you have is a gift! I will never get rid of my 1st gen
May eventually get a daily & keep the truck for adventures, but I see no need for a newer truck.

I plan to keep my 15 until I die as it will likely outlive me! The only thing I asked my wife for is a bigger hole to bury me in so I can use my truck as a coffin. All of this is unless the urge to get a 4Runner overwhelms me.

I just cant get on board with the front end on the 3rd gen....

Can you describe a bit more what you feel the differences are between your 15 and 19?
