I just transferred to San Antonio and I have a 1998 Tacoma 4x4 5sp and was experiencing a winding sound that seems related to the clutch. I can hear it a little when the car is in neutral, but when I press in the clutch pedal the noise is louder. It seems to go away slightly, but not completely when the truck warms up. Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

How many miles are on the truck? You could try lubing the release fork and if that doesn't work your throwout bearing might be going bad.

Sorry forgot to say mileage. It has about 78k. My uncles was thinking the throwout bearing might be the issue too but I'll look lubricating the fork first. Also if it turns out to be the TO bearing, is there a DIY on it? Is it a hard job? My mechanical experience tends to be when the job arises and trying to fumble through it.

Throwout or clutch release bearing is a pretty intensive job. We just replaced the clutch on my buddie's '01 Tacoma because of the throwout bearing. It had begun as a whine and developed into a horrendous squeal. To get to the bearing you have to pull the transmission out and for 3 guys having not done one in a Tacoma before it took us 12 hours to complete. Of course we were being thorough and overly cautious.

This is what the throwout bearing will look like if ignored too long. He was lucky nothing happened to the input shave on the transmission.

If you notice it got so hot that the metal had blued

Thanks for the pic and the info. Sorry it took me a while to respond, I was having some login issues. i just ending up taking to the dealer. My dad knew him and he gave us a good price. He just put in a new clutch kit and the noise is now gone.

    Thanks again!
