    Hi friends.
My 5 year old Tepui foam mattress expired. Mould, tears, depression, it was time to go.
I am considering replacing it with a 3” mattress from a local supplier here on Vancouver island. For $290(CAD),

it’s half an inch thicker than the luxury mattress offered by Tepui. ($319 CAD)

Also considering air mattress from MEC reactor 10, $299(CAD)

anyone ever put a 3 inch mattress in their roof top tent?

I camp in cold weather sometimes too, so wondering if air might be superior in that way.

    thoughts?
    thanks!

Air mattress would definitely help to reduce the weight of the tent over the back of the truck which would be nice...those thick foam mattresses are heavy AF.

One would think with all the air down and up onboard air options that air would be the way to go. I just hate the way it transfers movement on air mattress. It is myself, dog, son and wife. My wife rolls out a supplemental pad on her side, but we have never tried closing it up in the tent yet.

What would you suggest zippsub9? What made you change from the foam?
    Thanks

Would love to be able to do it.
From the reviews I have read in other places, it is a really great pad.
That price hasn't really moved much in years. That tells you something.
I have a double Klymit now, which has been working out pretty well.

I’m here to learn. I am still on stock setup with my FSR High Country. I don’t think air would work for me but what a great vapor barrier for the cold. I built a diesel heater to pump in warmth and it sweats me out. The combustion chamber that the air runs over gets up to 155 C.

I think I may look for a larger version of my wife’s setup. I think it is called a Serta rollout foam. Let me dig and find it. I would use it augment and not replace.

    here is what she got:

Very humble “here to learn” ;) sounds like you’ve got a good system for you now though. What temp do you usually start using your heater at?

In order to keep camping a “family” event I usually turn it on when temps go below 50 F. We don’t use sleeping bags. I used to sleep on a heated mattress pad with a heating blanket on top. This is awesome but requires a generator to keep up. I run a 1000w Honda out with a 100ft cord for that. I since switched over to solar and run the diesel heater instead now. We just use blankets still. I am south of the maple curtain and don’t suffer at all in the winter. My wife’s idea of camping is more Hilton and Hyatt than National Park.

Have been through several different RTT mattress/pad combinations.

Tepui Kukenam RTT. OEM mattress was never a good fit for my back. Being a side sleeper, ended up with sore shoulders/hips after a couple nights. 1" memory foam topper over original mattress helped, but not enough. 2 1/2" MF topper over original mattress was better, but getting tent compressed enough to get travel cover on became a problem and the MF doesn't breathe, so sweaty nights if above 40° as well as stiff/hard below 30°.

Removed OEM mattress and went with two ExPed Megamats (not the self inflating versions) so we could each set firmness and move around independently without transferring to the other's. Found ExPed's much more comfortable for both of us (she's back sleeper, likes softer mattress). But, the aluminum diamond plate floor in the Tepui transferred cold to the air mattresses much more than the OEM foam mattress and the tent compressed too much without some type of foam mattress inside. Futzed around with different solutions (different thickness MF toppers on the floor with ExPed's on top, etc, no mattress but stuffed closed tent with clothes/bedding to fill in dead space, etc.).

Our best solution was a new Tepui standard mattress combined with the ExPed's on top. Nearing 60 total nights with this combination and although not as comfortable as our home bed, it is better than any hotel bed I've ever slept on and leaps/bounds better than original mattress or ExPed's alone. We do flip/spin mattress every few trips, although likely not needed with ExPed's providing support.

In talking to other RTT folks in our search to find the perfect solution, became clear that it's a personal thing and their solutions weren't ours and vice-versa.

Thank you for the in depth description!

Are you able to keep the ExPed’s deflated in the RTT when folded up? How is the inflating / deflating process?

Is the Tepui mattress mainly there for thermal insulation - or does having foam under an air mattress somehow make things more comfortable?

    thanks again billum!
