I did have a r7000 that I transferred to my parents. It wasn't a bad router. The interface left a little to be desired. May have to see if I can take a look at one. Thanks for the info!

I have a Linksys WRT3200ACM. Solid router with good speed and coverage. Good interface and doesn't charge extra for features like parental controls.

    Yeah.
I'm running a Ubiquiti Amplifi mesh system -- the layout of my house needed the two mesh nodes. We have no TV service and only stream, and pretty much everyone is streaming something (family of 4), somewhere around 30 devices connected at any time. It's been great. Their new home system looks awesome, but you have to buy a full router for every node. Not dropping a grand on that until most of my devices support WiFi6.

I have a Nighthawk X8 that I was using before, but it caps out at around 300 Mbps throughput even wired. It's not supposed to, and they wouldn't reply to the community on their help forum as to why or what they were doing to fix it. It's a beast of a router and works well, and most people don't need more than 300, it just pissed me off.

Was that more of a HW or SW limitation on the router?

As a security guy, I need this. As a collector of coffee cups...I don’t.

As a former coder I resemble that remark. I was hired to work on an Air Force contract as a programmer. The code written by the previous contractor was an absolute train wreck. :poking: I'd fix one bug and 2 more would show up further down the code. Fixing those would uncover 4 more, then 8, 16, 32 . . . .:annoyed:

We fired GE from one contract when they tried to patent government-owned code. Silly rabbits.

We have a poster up on the wall down in the Unix admin section that reads:

I used to have a problem
So I used Java to fix it.

    Now

    I have 137 problems.

    Yeah.
I can only speculate. Theoretically the hardware is capable, so I tend to think it's the software. I tried an open source distro at one point, but for some reason it could only see 2 of the 3 radios (or it was combining 2 of them as one, but I could not validate that). I never tested throughput with the open source. I tried all the suggestions, turning off MIMO and QoS features in an attempt to let traffic flow as freely as possible, but it still capped at just under 300Mbps. Directly connected to the cable modem I could push over 900.

    Yeah.
I inherited some VBS-like code once that was written in a mix of ALL CAPS, all lowercase, and cAmel case. The engine was case insensitive. It worked, I just had to update how it was accessing the database. I left comments at the top about how I had thought about refactoring it but decided to leave it there to show others what NOT to do.

The previous contractor had been hired to write the code and then run the system after it was finished. They had been fired for non-performance. We had a 30 day deliverable that if not met would cause us to lose the contract too. I'd never heard of the language and knew none of this when I accepted the position. All I heard was you'll make more money if you come to work for us.

That job was the last government contract I worked. When it came up for bid again it was with the same job requirements and low bid wins. Everyone on the contract had 2 years worth of raises and experience, so it was almost a forgone conclusion that we would lose. The programmers position only required a BS in Computer Science. Any college graduate was qualified and experience counted for nothing. As a tax payer the stupidity of it irked me. No college in the area was teaching the language, so I knew tax payers would paying for some fresh graduate to learn what I already knew. Not to mention the fact that I knew the code inside out because I had touched practically every line of it, again the tax payers paying twice.

I bailed 2 months before it ended because I wasn't willing to be unemployed and a great offer came my way. In the end it went to a different contractor. Not sure what happened after that.

I think the code I inherited was mostly just pseudo-code. The logic was kind of there, but there were syntax errors everywhere. Whoever wrote it clearly never tried to run it.

Accidentally deleted my external hardrive on my Mac. Had lots of pictures etc on there that I would love back. I’ve recovered a camera memory card before using some free software. I just can’t recall what it was. Looking for the best coarse of action. Thanks. Also hard drive was not damaged, unplugged and has not been used since to avoid overwriting the data. Appreciate all your brains!!!

yeah that’s a paid one. And I don’t mind paying if that’s my only option. but I know there are some great free ones out there. I’ve used them in the past.

    Ruh roh.

We have no offshore support because we block foreign IPs for protections. Forces us to hire American.

Or Canadian. They seem to be OK.
