Didn't know that, would be interested to see real-world numbers on improvement though. Sometimes I get the feeling Toyota spends way too much effort throwing in gizmos and cutting little things here and there for what seems like insignificant mileage/emissions purposes. I would guess maybe they do it because they think it makes for good PR, but when customers keep getting frustrated over some of this stuff you have to wonder if it pays off...

Hmm, to me it seems like Toyota is pretty good at letting the other major auto manufacturers try things out and then incorporating them if they prove themselves in the real world, I mean they have 0 cars with turbos (excluding lexus). The 2.7L has had an air injection pump since 2005 so at least they held off on the 4.0L. Looks like the when they started using the pump the truck went from being a "low emissions vehicle" to an "ultra low emissions vehicle"

The air injection pump is there to facilitate the catalytic converter. When you let off the throttle while the engine is cold and running rich, there is a shit ton of unburned fuel that goes into the exhaust. The pump injects ambient air so the converter can do its job. Doing away with the pump will result in a much shorter life of the converter

I plan on doing this extension soon as well. Good info. I was told one of the things you can do is use a vapour cannister instead of the arb unit. with a basic filter. I imagine you could also just use a basic manifold if cost was a huge factor. running a hose up to a remote filter location.

Best of luck! Would love to see pics of how it went. I've also heard about the vapor canister idea... can't recall if I read somewhere that this can cause some sort of water or clogging issue or if I'm confusing that with something else. It was on TW somewhere, but don't have time to look at the moment. I have seen a few other good non-ARB alternatives on here though.

Do the breather line for the t-case and transmission end up "T-ing" together? I just got done laying under my truck and feeling up my transmission/T case and could only find the end of one breather line.

Nope should be two different breathers, Tcase ends up stopping on top of the trans, and trans vents out at the top of the bell housing. This is at least for the auto.

Okay thanks. I'm guessing I found the one for the trans. I'll have to go out and keep searching.

The trans one should be able to be seen on from the passenger side looking down the back of the motor. Tcase is by feel.

Ah okay. I definitely found the transmission then. Does the Tcase have the same silver breather cap like everything else?

Ok, I might be a dumbdumb. I think I zip-tied one breather to the other without realizing it. I went searching again and found what I think are the two breathers. One, with the silver cap, was clipped on the top of the transmission close to the bell housing. I traced it back to the transfer case. The other, the black capped thing, was traced and originated on the top of the transmission towards the front. Have I succeeded in finding these two breathers?

Oh what I would have given to know about this mod before getting the frame recall done... could have saved so much time and hassle.

Yea that's a good point. I'm wondering if that's where the AT dipstick would have gone if my truck had one.

This is the same conclusion I came to after feeling up my truck (quit romantic).

I'm just curious though as to why the tranny breather looks like it's been sealed shut at the end instead of having a breather cap? Anyone have any idea?

    Yes
Looks like there was no conclusive method set for this... would lifting the body off the frame (as if you were to install a body lift) be overkill to do this? Procedure doesn’t look too horrible.
