As I was washing my truck I noticed the plastic housing on both sides was cracked. Is it worth mentioning to the dealer? Are any of yours cracked? Im trying to figure out if it will affect the structural integrity of the actual shock..

    Thanks

Mention it , say you drive like a grandma and never been offroading. If they refuse to replace it say i hope i dont crash or youll be responsible and make sure to tell them you want the mechanics name on file who refused to replace it. Thatll be more than enough for them to replace it

Just noticed this on my own rig. Looks just like the second picture. Anything ever happen with this, OP? Just curious. Was going to replace everything in Summer but worried I may have to sooner.

Sheeeeeit baby. Ain’t no thang. Think of that plastic cover like the plastic ring on the inside of your rear ten-speed wheel.

Pretty sure it’s just cosmetic. The actual shock would be metal.

They’re just plastic covers. Doesn’t affect the shock at all.

Recently a mechanic tossed mine out without asking. Any replies as to where and if these hard plastic covers can still be found?

It’s a dust cover or what people in the mechanic industry call “beauty covers”. Sometimes they are more a pain in the butt than useful.

Thank you Tacomike18, yes most likely cosmetic. My concern is I live beachside, new shocks right out of the shop are showing rust already. Any recommendations on that?
