The 5.29 Mega Thread!!

Just clicking on your pic and seeing your rig with the rack and RTT. I’d deff go 5.29. I’m running 5.29, the same size tire on a truck with maybe 350lbs total of added weight and it does great. (Weight = Sliders, full size spare, bakflip tonneu cover, rubber bed mat and that’s it) it’s been perfect so far for me and not as dramatic of a change that I thought it would be. I’ve had it up to 80mph and am turning 2435 RPM at 75mph accurate on my scangauge and it doesn’t feel like too much at all.

I’m currently running OVtune’s 4.88 beta tune and it’s been great, holds shifts longer from a stop than stock, not as long as stock with ect but just long enough that it feels right.

 

Have you run your truck with the new gears without the tune?

 

I did during my break in and shortly after. Maybe for about 600 miles total. but that was mainly 55mph and under. mostly 50/50 mix of highway city driving. What i noticed most was from a stop it holds gears 1-4 longer, (not as long as stock with ect on) but feels almost perfect on shift points. and does seem to hold gears on grades a bit better with the tune as well.

 

I ask, because I am curious the difference it makes with the tune and gears. After I added the gears, I feel as though the gears aren’t shifting as quickly as they did. And most certainly doesn’t down shift into 4th when I am on a slight incline anymore.
Can you tell a difference?

 

What I noticed after gears was that the truck upshifts much faster than stock gear ratio from a stop on gears 1-4. which, is a given and normal for re gearing to a lower ratio. The tune however holds the gears longer which is nice. The main reason for re gearing though is what you mentioned. downshifting on grades, and the gears helped a ton. I feel like the tune helps even more, it's not as much of a difference as re gearing, but it definitely helps hold those gears even longer, mostly 6th gear. I'm curious to see how the 2.0 final tune will be with 5.29's. I'm hoping it holds 5th even more so than now. there's very very rare times it shifts from 6th to 4th and back up to 5th very quickly and hoping those get completely eliminated.

Good to know. Tents about 200 lbs. rack is all aluminum so it’s not much. Maybe 45/50 lbs tops. Rear bumper is about as much as stock bumper. Maybe 10/15 lbs more.

 

The 5.29 tune that was sent out for testing, is awesome. I have a 350-400 miles on this tune and the truck drives so much better than it ever did with any 4.88 tune that I tried. The final version should be better.

 

I am getting my truck from RSG tommorow with 5.29, should i ovtune it too? or stock tuning is fine? just curious.

 

A big reason I bought OVtune is for the 5.29 tune. I dont even have gears yet.

 

You should monitor diff temps for incorrectly setup gears!

 

what should be normal temp ? 140F or higher?

 

The first two trips out you dont want to go more than 10 miles before letting them cool off. Then after that just take it easy for 500 miles, change the fluid and youre good. RSG should give you solid instructions when you pick it up. 140 would be a max in the first 20-30 miles.

 

its kinda strange but they state 1000 miles break in and change oil after 1000, and break in just no towing and then just drive in variable speeds not like get on highway speeds and stay 70 constant but variate etc.

 

this is what I followed. Gears seem great so far. My first two drives were short maybe 3 mi drives around town with 30min between them. Third drive was about 13 miles that included about 7 miles at 50 mph. The rest I just didn’t drive more than 50 miles at a time with a full hour cool down between and kept them under 60mph for the first 500 miles,

I left the install shop and drove 2 miles to the gas station, filled up, then hit the interstate for what was probably 10-15 miles at 50-60mph, then pulled off of the road for an hour and ate lunch. I then jumped back on the interstate for another 30 minutes at 50-60mph. I basically did this all the way home, 30 minutes on (50-60 mph) and 30 minutes off for around 120 miles total. Tell me I didn’t fu*k this up..

Each stop, the rear diff was hot to the touch but not hot enough to make me take my hand off.

 

So got mine back last night, love it so far definitely different feel and run, feels like what it should of been from factory to be honest, i finally began seeing my 5th and 6th gear usage, got with me infra-red temp sensor to measure temp, hottest it got was 119F after doing 55-70 mph for a few, rest of time was around 100 to 105F, in city was about 95F. I did notice if you pay attention you could hear very very low whine when decel from around 40 to 0 mph. will probably go away as gears get settled. Drive feels very perky you will notice really quickly how it goes from gear 1 - 3 within first 5 seconds of acceleration from stop light and operate 4-6 afterwards. On Hills holds 5th longer and in some cases if hill is high goes 4th and stays there till end only switched to 3rd once, where i know it would run 3rd from base of hill till end.

So far have about 200 miles on it already in 2 days of driving, will post my results as i go.

oh other thing my mileage usage went from 14.2 to 17.9, since its mix of highway and city dont know exactly what highway is, but thats what my comp shows now, so will see how it progresses.

Does anyone have the OEM Toyota part numbers for the following? I just went to the dealership and they were no help:

-OEM Tacoma front and rear pinion seals
-OEM Tacoma rear e-locker electrical connector (blue 12-volt activation wire)
