    Metalbestos makes a good product, for a thimble. They call it the 'thru wall kit' if I remember right.

    Edit- They're marketed under the Selkirk name now.

    Yeah, Soapstone's pricey. Woodstoves in general, really.

    I got mine used out of Craigslist for $500. It needed some work; it had been stored in a damp cellar and the cast iron was all rusty, the baffle was shot, and it needed new gaskets in the door, window, and ash pan. But it's been a great stove so far. We're on our 8th winter with it, I think.

    Me too! I do two chains at once. Carry the spare in the case. Saves me from myself when I get to those “10 more cuts and this job is done” moments. I swap chains and bada-boom.

    A few reasons:

    I've found they cut hard woods better. They clean the cut a LOT better. You only have to sharpen half the teeth when you catch a piece of wire in the tree or rock the damn thing.

    Honestly they cut as fast as the full comp chains for me.
