There’s multiple shift points based on your selection. In d or s with ect or without each has its on shift points (at least from my reading)

I consider D as “eco mode”- this will get you the best mpg. I consider S as “normal mode”, I never go into s6 (f 6th gear). I only use s4/s5 with ect on every time I drive and I love it- all those this transmission sucks threads, nope not here.

    I haven't used D mode in 2 years. S5 90% of the time.

S5 fixes 90% of the complaints you see here about the tranny.

Honest question... does this ever drive you crazy, did it ever drive you crazy, having to select 4 or 5 on your automatic transmission?

I ask because I drive 3 vehicles that are all manuals. I'm wondering how long it can stomach this before I go insane, but I think having to shift the auto would get old too.

It’s really a non issue. I get in and push the start button, I close the garage (I can’t park inside), I press ect on my shift knob (Meso stage2 shifter makes it convenient and seamless- no looking/searching for the oem ect button) then put it in s4 or s5 and done. I don’t actually shift in s mode (s1,2,3,4,5) unless I’m in s4 and need to go to s5 (then you just push knob up once)

it really is simple and no thinking involved- just comes natural

When I wound take my 2011 to the Black Hills, I would drive it like this, 4 or D, dropping it down to 3rd when needed. It was fun for a little while, but trying to feel and anticipate what the truck needed constantly... I was always happy to head home and put it in drive and leave it there.

This is where my frustration comes from in with a manual. I think about it less in my Tacoma instead of my dump truck, but I still think about it.

I suspect I'd do the same in an auto Tacoma.

    Thanks for the feedback.

You may have slightly misunderstood. I dont constantly shift from s4-s5 and back down to s4. I either keep it/start out at s4 or s5 depending on where I’m at but on occasion if I’m in s4 and I’m going faster I’ll pop it into s5 (and leave it). Basically if I kniw im going to be driving under 45 I’ll start as s4 or over 45 I’ll start it in s5. My reason is to never use 6th gear and the better shifting points (no hunting or lag) I personally feel drive is eco mode and I do t use it.
I could downshift like a manual to brake like I’ve seen some mention they do but I just don’t. If I did that I would rather just drive a manual.

No disrespect to anyone, but I don't get that mod. I just can press my button and save some $$$.

But your point is made and recognized.

Say your trying to scream up a sand dune but half way up the trans shifts and you lose power band. S mode and select desired gear to limit that shift and continue to scream up sand dune without a problem.

Oh and towing, hills, city, etc. Anytime you want to limit that gear shift.

S is sequential it tells the truck which gear is the highest it can go to. It can hunt lower than that though. S6 is the same as d.

Holding in s5 on the highway people have reported better mpg since its not hunting for 6th and then constantly down shifting.
