I'll tell him you said that. I'll also narc him out - he's the reason that they're only allowed to use the microwaves on C-5s and not bring Foreman grills along anymore.

It's all fun and games until you get a little zero-G for a second and the grease goes everywhere!

Why aren't there any Wal-marts in Iran?

There's already a bunch of Targets.

Ahhhh... the new age recruit. Good reason I didn’t do more then 20. We would’ve never mouthed off to a drill, and if we did... we got our asses smoked. As a senior NCO, I just logged this behavior and started paperwork. Not even worth getting heated over a shit bag that just needs to get sent home.

Yeah and discipline wasn’t nearly the problem it is today. We didn’t have the wall to wall counseling but getting smoked for eight hours was a very real possibility. It was simple, mouth off or fuck up... get the shit smoked out of you. Body pain reenforced the desire to never do it again. Once it was done, no need to discuss it again.

These days retention is so high that if anyone wants the door opened, it doesn’t take much to help them out. Worst I’ve had to do in the last 10 years is withhold promotion from someone because they do enough, but not enough for the next pay grade. He was fine with it and he never did improve his performance but he literally did just enough to skate by.

Sounds like 90% of the e4s I’ve ever had. We needed that kind too, just don’t get mad when we tell you to go to the board or get out at 4-5 years TIS.

I don’t care if someone stays in 20 years as an E4. If they’re good at the job and just don’t want to be a leader I see no reason to try to keep moving them along. That’s how we’ve ended up with so many shitty NCOs over the years, by pushing people into promotions and leadership positions who just are cut out for it.

I agree. Sometimes you don’t need a boss with 10 years of experience, you need a worker with 20. Get rid of up or out would be a good thing, but then we’d need a better system. Aviation is a great example.

I have no idea what that might be though so here we are.

Bring back the old Spec 5, 6, etc, and make them basically pay increases for experience based on time in service and proficiency. They'd need to be a new pay scale so a Spec 6 with no real responsibilities isn't being paid the same as a SSG/E6 but I think it could work.

Disagree... if there’s no motivation to move up after 4-5 years, odds are there is no self motivation. If I need someone that acts like a private, I can get those. There’s good reason for retention control points. Ever have an e5 with 18 years in service? I have. Worst NCO I’ve ever had. Came back off R&R and one of my e4s was in charge and doing a much better job. When you’re content in those positions, eventually you loose all initiative and get lazy. Can’t speak to civilian jobs or even support jobs (technical fields) but it’s always held true in my experience for line companies.

Or a massive plan for recruiting with no base of snr ncos, forcing them to push really young and inexperienced guys into leadership roles. Shit show. Now I have to verbally assist and mentor them a lot more. Guess that's why they call it baby sitting.

Whenever I had folks like that, all we'd have to do is non-concur with reenlistment. Easy. They get an honorable discharge, and we don't have to deal with them anymore. The last one I did was a fantastic E4 - and horrible (and I mean dreadful) E5. Night and day. Super responsive - if you told him to get something done he was on it - but he had all the initiative of a coral formation. Just sit there and let all the other productive little fishies swim around him. Ironically, I've run into him again 10 years later...and he's still just as unmotivated but now he's 38.

There's a candidate for non-concur. If they'd denied that one reenlistment then the rest of the troops would have gotten the message.

Whenever I had non-performers I would recommend that they join the Army/Air Force/Coast Guard after their EAS... :boink:

Eh. Job isn't everything. I mean the number of billets goes way down after E-7 (in certain rates, anyway) and you're limited to a handful of duty stations. That, and peeps have families. Get promoted and drag your kids across the country again? Meh. Ride it a year or two longer. Or if the spouse has a good job. You can still be high speed and motivated and kick butt. It doesn't mean that you need to subject yourself to the whims of the system until you have to.
