There is no frame recall. Dealer scam.

Where is this dealer, that we may see them properly shunned?

Some 3rd gens, specifically in the rust belt are having their frames treated with anti-corrosion material.

I’m not sure how this could be considered a scam when the dealer is already offering and performing the work.

There is a TSB out for the frame compound.

I don't have any knowledge of a rusty frame recall, but with any recall there is no charge to the customer.

Didn't past frame recalls involve replacing the rusty frame with a new frame?

A dealer offering to provide a frame undercoating and a Toyota-backed recall are two VERY different things.

"Recall" is a word that has legal ramifications and support expectations in the automotive business and should not be used in lieu of something more functionally correct.

Regardless of the semantics being debated above the bottom line is, no, you shouldn't be concerned. Buy with confidence.

Just a FYI, the frame thing is 16-17, so us with 18s dont get it yet. Maybe in the future they will release one for the 18, but nothing currently.

But, since your wondering about it. I would check the frame of the truck your buying, if the frame is pretty rusty, then I would walk away from it. If its not that bad, then you can do some cleanup your self and repaint the frame.

When I got my truck, I flooded all the inner parts of the frame with fluid film, then I wash it pretty much every other day in the winter to keep salt off the frame. 15k miles and zero rust on the frame.

Toyota did some minor upgrades to the frames starting 2018, you shouldnt get a recall notice, i wouldnt worry about it.

With that said, you should definetily check the frame thoroughly before buying and consider rust prevention coatings if you live where they use salt.

    Good luck.

You would have thought they would have done these "upgrades" back in 2005...

Im thinking since its localized to rust belt states it was more costly to do this to all frames than it was to replace rusted frames. Thats assuming that every truck sold in a rust state lives long enough to need a frame, you have crashed trucks, blown engine trucks, stolen trucks, trucks that the owner rust proofed them selves, trucks that were never driven in the salt, trucks that get moved out of state (though this one goes both ways). All those factors drop the number of trucks actually needing a frame.

Granted the PR issue of being labeled a rust bucket can cause sales issue, but it just makes the potential owners get aftermarket rust proofing done and only damages the used truck sales market.

It is mostly localized to states that use salt and brine on the roads but still no other manufacturers have this big of an issue with frames rusting so bad that they fall apart within 10-15 years of being on the road. Tacomas have block off plates in the dumbest locations and seem to start to rust faster than any other vehicle on the market.

True, most other trucks have good rust proofing on the frames, but many of those same trucks have trash rust proofing on the body. I see newish trucks with rusted out tailgates or fender flares all the time. Would be nice if we could get both parts rust proofed correctly.

Agreed. My 96 thankfully came from California so no rust on the frame or body really. Ive always kept it well coated so it should last for a long time at this point.

Yeah, im doing my best to keep rust limited on my 2018. Since 11/8/2018 I have gotten 143 car washes over 1 and a half winters, I hand wash in the summer. Ive got some work to do this summer though as I was not able to really fluid film again before winter hit this year.

Your engine will blow eventually, might as well drain the oil and run it now to get it over with.
Your truck will get dents eventually, might as well hit it with a hammer a few times to get it started.
Your seats will rip eventually, might as well cut them up now so its not a eye sore when they do rip.
Your going to die eventually, might as well jump off a cliff now since its going to happen any how.

Once you fluid film the undercarriage you are better off not washing those areas until after winter is over fyi.
