4LO and 5SPD automatic transmission question

Anybody else noticed that in 4LO, you have only 4 speed with the 6cyl 5spd transmission? I even tried with manually selecting every single speed, and 5th does not load in. Why would they have done it like that... is that a normal behavior of automatic trucks with 4X4 4LO?

I hope it's not just to limit speed in 4LO.

 

Its normal. In 4L you have no need for overdrive.

 

How fast would you want to go in 4 low? I can't imagine ever needing 5th gear....

 

Never tried to go in 5th while in 4lo

If you need to go faster it should be in 4hi

 

I probably never go over 15 in 4lo. If I need/ want to go faster thats why I have 4hi and 2hi.

 

Could be of use, when you get in a small stretch between 2 crawling areas... no need to switch out of 4LO. That would be well over 100KPH top speed, engine would not be over-reving, and yes I like to go fast. Had lot of fun with my manual in 4LO for that reason.

Point of the thread is ''why they did that'', EX: overheating of bearings... This is not a moral/ethical thread.

 

How would you know? How fast in the world did you go in L4? Red Line City!!!

 

At fast speeds why would you need 4L? 4H would be more than acceptable I mean damn 65mph in 4H! I assume they didn't incorporate OD into the equation because you will never get 4L up to a speed where you could utilize it, 4L is not for racing or crusing, its a crawling gear. To me it would be like wanting to drive on the interstate in 1st gear, why don't the let you do that?.....because it will pop first.

 

Maybe the OP doesn't want to stop, put it in neutral, shift to 4HI, put it back in gear, and start driving again every time he gets out of a small section of trail that needs the slower 4LO power?

I know I rarely use 4LO on trails for that simple fact. It's annoying to not be able to shift between 4HI and 4LO on-the-fly. Manual says it's supposed to be possible at 5mph or less, but I've NEVER been able to do that in my 6spd. I ALWAYS have to stop, shift to neutral, clutch to the floor, THEN move into/out of 4LO. Makes it annoying when you're trying to keep up or keep from holding up wheeling buddies.

Although, if you leave it in 4LO all the time and get stuck the only real option left is a winch. Unless you have a locker and that's enough to get you out.

 

The taller gears are weaker! You think about it, your torque multiplication is increased by two and a half times that is likely enough stress to cause trouble.

 

No i mean in general the taller gears are weaker. I don't think anybody out there is going to be bashing around wot in 4Lo in the upper gears. Just saying when I take my jeep out and am playing hard I don't like goin above 3rd gear in low range granted i have a 4 to 1 low range. But anyways back on topic...

 

That makes sense. Last time I wheeled was with a buddy who had a jeep cherokee he didn't care if he beat the snot out of. He just left it in 4HI and used more skinny pedal. I wasn't about to bounce my truck off the rocks. He also had an auto whereas I had to shift gears if I needed more power. On some parts that meant 4LO to get going again as I lost too much momentum downshifting. (And being gentle on the skinny pedal.) If I had sliders and skids I may have been more brave. In the end though I had to jump start him twice and tow it for a bit because he sucked in water, and drained his battery trying to get it started again.

I am no Off-Road expert, and never implied so. But I DO LIKE Off-Road, and I also do like to HAVE FUN with my truck, in gravel, snow, in both 4HI and in 4LO.

Also, I may be too lazy to shift out of 4LO for the stretches...

But at least, I bought a truck I like, and I don't sink down threads because others have what I don't (and would like).

Maybe if they added the words (most of us know, I hope): "OVER DRIVE" for 5th gear... and all LOW RANGE is "under drive"
