That may work, yes. I believe there is then a flash that enables CarPlay to be installed

I'm just saying. You think entune is trash and you want to go to another entune radio....

I would like to keep the Tacoma “stock” and use a “Toyota” radio that has Apple CarPlay

I don’t want to lose my steering wheel functions and other glitches that come with after market stereos like Kenwood etc

I’m with OP. I don’t like the look of aftermarket radios. I want to use a Toyota head unit and get CarPlay.

I installed Kenwood unit and maestro rr, everything retained, except factory microphone. But the microphone comes with Kenwood works just fine.

Did you change speakers or anything else? Wondering how much nicer the stock speakers sound with more power.

I am still on factory speakers, but I did swap out with Subaru tweeter. The sound is really nice with the kenwood HU, you're able to a lot more with sound on this HU

What was the cost of everything if you don't mind me asking? Also, (forgive me I'm very uneducated in this subject) does that Kenwood unit have apple carplay?

the screen is larger so idk if the trim panel would fit. Also I just got 2020 and tried to install my OEM Audio plus stuff from my 17 and the radio connectors are different.

I believe it is possible to hook up the 2020 HU to the older year trucks, but a jumper cable is required.

Do you mind posting what all you purchased to make this setup work? Did you buy from Crutchfield? Did you replace the OEM HU? I currently have the JBL unit.

I had the same thought as the OP for my 19' and didn't have the choice to wait until 2020s came out when I needed a new vehicle. After a bunch of research, it's basically a ton of work as it wouldn't be plug and play. It would honestly be cheaper and easier to just trade the truck in for one with a newer head unit. At this point, I'm looking at some of the android tablet head units, the chinese joying and T9s. Figuring out the ins and outs before I pull the trigger and make the switch. Seems like they have a lot more capabilities than the stock units, retain the steering wheel controls, and the only thing you loose is the nav/music info in the gauge cluster, which I don't care about.

As technology progresses, I really wish auto makers would just adopt a standard across the board, bridging the gap from one maker to the next. While a vehicle might not be "outdated" in a 5-10 span, the tech in the head unit most certainly is and it would be nice if you could just swap out a head unit plug and play style to keep current.

Lol same. I come from a world of aux cords and single dins. The entune is a huge step up from that. I haven't had issues with mine ever either.

I'm not the person you asked, but I got the Kenwood DMX906S at Crutchfield. Enter in your taco model, add the DMX906S (or whatever) to your cart and Crutchfield then shows you all the other stuff you need. The one thing I don't think they recommended was a radio antenna adaptor. I later got one on Amazon for $10.

Wireless CarPlay is nice, just hop in and no need to get your phone out of your pocket, just roll.

Main annoyance of the Kenwood is the 10 sec message from Kenwood's lawyers every time it fires up.

Stock speakers still sound like stock speakers.
