knew a couple E5's retired at 20...they were worthless. One was on terminal leave and the housing office basically had to kick him off base.

Right? Geostability stuff usually gets thrown out the window with promotions. I mean it's a different calculus from the E4-E5 non performers. So, service or family?

Big difference between forcing someone to promote and letting the system force out those that don’t have any self motivation. Also a big difference with soft skill jobs (support, technical trade type, etc). I can understand and get behind that. On the line in a combat mos, it leads to problems having too many guys with zero initiative or drive. Our jobs aren’t full of technical experience at the joe level. I can teach a rock to point and shoot, maneuver, and use explosives. At the higher levels you plan, coordinate, and shape the battle field. I think there is a valid distinction for you guys in other branches in a technical field. My comments were for guys in the environment I operated in. No initiative to do the stuff you need to do in garrison often means no initiative to move to contact or engage the enemy when shit matters.

Not for everyone or every unit. Hell, I had joes that were later my squad leaders in the same company years later. Line companies in a combat unit leaves opportunities for lateral moves within the same unit. We were also 150 man company with 4 platoons.

Yeah, meanwhile over here in CG M land or a Cyber field or something it's already super high asvab scores, and then I need you to be able to be mature and deal with civilians as their regulator, and have a thorough understanding of federal regulations. Even the qualification process to send someone in the field is usually a minimum of six months to be minimally, and by the time you're a E-6 you're required to have a minimum of 3 qualifications. So I'm lucky if a E-4 (or a high speed E-5) has more than one qual.

So yeah, even though we're on the same payscales we're kinda worlds apart some days. From my point of view, if someone wants to do their 5 years at a unit and not promote, cool beans as long as the job gets done.

When I went in, In 1976 this would not have happened like this. A Drill instructor would have drilled his young ass in the ground. this is what happens when they record Basic for a souvenir CD and they also let these pussies have a telephone.

My money is on him switching platoons with another drill. And the recruit will be booted within the month.

USAF too. I can't remember if E5 was still a 16-year HYT with reduced retirement or if that was simply a force reduction measure for a specific period of time.

Best of all, when you bust a dirtbag E5 over 10 to E4, he's out immediately for breaking HYT.

I can get behind that, and considering the world you work in, it makes sense.

I disagree. But maybe it's just because of my background. In the Corps every Marine is a basic Rifleman regardless of MOS. The thinking being when the $hit hits the fan and a tactical nuke takes out all the trons on the battlefield, each Marine can pick up his rifle and still carry the fight to the enemy. I don't need a 40 year old Cpl who has to take geritol to get outta the rack in the morning trying keep up with the hard chargers and becoming dead weight. Also, keeping dead weight on active duty keeps a spot occupied that could be filled by someone with actual potential. There is a government program for those that just want to get by and do the least possible. It's called welfare.

I agree, mostly. In the example, the guy was CG working in cyber warfare. That dude doesn’t even have a weapon available in the armory. Also RCP is a limiting factor, even if they were grossly expanded in the early 2000s. Sorry but no excuse for a 15 year e5 or 20 year e5 promotable in the army. You want to argue how great it is to have that experience in a joe? Well how much better would it be if he was in a higher position spreading that experience and mentoring younger troops? You want to sit comfortably and stagnate in position, go work at the super market or Best Buy.

Or come back as a contractor. Those positions exist for a reason.
