What have you done to your Tacoma today? 1st Gen Edition

How have they been performing?

 

One side is perfect and the other side has a small chunk missing, but hasn't gotten much worse. I can't really say it's the fault of the bump stop though, for all I know a sharp rock got caught between the bump stop and the strike plate while I was in the dirt and caused it to chip...not much you can do about that.

They haven't completely split though like the old ones did so that's good, have had them on for about a year now since the original set. The feel much, much better than the stock front bumps that's for sure.

FWIW I have Superbumps in the rear and no issues with those yet

That's the first time i've seen anyone use some 2.5 bypass shocks in the rear of a first gen like that

Are you using the factory upper mounts? Looks like you welded on some lower mounts to the housing.

 

I relocated the entire thing. Had a new crossmemeber welded and the lower mounts welded to the axle. Need a ubolt flip to get rid of the ugly stock mount plates though haha

 

Oh gotcha. Can't see it in that picture. What travel are they?

How you like them? a 2.5 bypass seems kinda overkill for these lightweight trucks, but i'm sure the tuning ability they have is sweet.

Eventually I plan on throwing some 2.5" smoothies under mine when I can relocate the mounts and get the spare out from under there.

 

5 wheel, rearward cross is what I do. Got my last set of tires to 45k before I sold them with 7/32” tread still remaining.

why aren’t you rotating in your full size spare?!?

 

I got the bypasses because they were a few hundred more than the smooth bodies so I thought what the hell and got em. They are amazing to have though, I have gotten in a couple situation where I hit washes going wayyyyy too fast and have never hit the bump stops so I’d say they are worth the extra cash.

 

I usually rotate the spare in when it's time to replace the four.

 

What's a full size spare?

tsk tsk, don't be like me and realize you needed one at the worst possible time haha. Luckily the difference between a 32 and 33 isn't all that much and I made it work with the mismatch up front. Got a full size spare though right after I got home from that trip.

I was going to ask if you cycled the pack when you did the relocation too. 10" travel and you didn't extend the bumps at all?

 

I don't think they count if they're on your other truck and not with you on the trail

 

I don't have a spare 33's so I kept 4 stock 265's as my spare

 

I carry 2 spares on the 99, a 33 and a 265 cause I’m too lazy to swap the 2.

The other 3 sit to the side of the house

 

The bump stops are the next plan with the ubolt flip. Meant I haven’t bottomed out as of yet when I said I haven’t hit the bump stops lol.
